The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is an exciting organisation with a commitment to supporting early-career researchers. This placement provides the opportunity to not only learn from experienced museum staff but also contribute to live projects in connection with museum collections, archives, and research initiatives.

Role Summary:

  • Support provenance research into objects in the V&A’s collection linked to the 1867–8 British Expedition to Ethiopia.
  • Consult archival records at the V&A and beyond to trace how these objects entered the collection.
  • Contribute to updating catalogue records for Ethiopian material, ensuring they reflect the most accurate and up-to-date information.


Role Requirements:

  • Must be a PhD student.
  • Ability to conduct detailed and methodical research.

The Role The V&A is pleased to announce a new doctoral placement opportunity for the 2025–2026 academic year. As part of our commitment to supporting early-career researchers, the V&A offers a range of doctoral placements designed in collaboration with museum staff. These placements give PhD students the chance to contribute to live projects while gaining hands-on experience with collections, archives, and research initiatives.

The Role This placement will support provenance research into objects in the V&A’s collection linked to the 1867–8 British Expedition to Ethiopia. The researcher will consult archival records at the V&A and beyond to trace how these objects entered the collection, and to explore the museum’s historical relationships with collectors, the British Army, and the UK government during and after the expedition. Working with the Provenance Research Curator, the researcher will also contribute to updating catalogue records for Ethiopian material, ensuring they reflect the most accurate and up-to-date information.
