The Role The V&A is pleased to announce a new doctoral placement opportunity for the 2025–2026 academic year. As part of our commitment to supporting early-career researchers, the V&A offers a range of doctoral placements designed in collaboration with museum staff. These placements provide PhD students with opportunities to contribute to live research projects while gaining hands-on experience with collections, archives, and exhibition development.
This placement will support the V&A’s net zero by 2035 goal by researching and developing sustainable material alternatives and zero-waste design strategies for temporary exhibitions. The researcher will focus on design methodologies that reduce material waste and enable reuse—such as reconfigurable moulding systems, adaptable joints, and computational modelling—while meeting conservation and curatorial standards. The research will contribute to a more sustainable approach to exhibition making at the V&A by supporting innovation in fabrication processes and informing future curatorial and design decisions.
