What will you be doing?
Headway Darlington and District, is a small charity set up to give help and support to people affected by brain injury. The charity is looking for someone to become Chair of the Trustee Board. Our current Chair will step down in December 2025 having served for more than four years. Headway Darlington is a small charity with a turnover of around £35K pa. We support people with an acquired brain injury by providing a range of activities and services including a drop-in, arts and creative crafts, monthly trips out and ten pin bowling. We have a 12 hour pw Development Worker and a strong Board of Trustees. Funding is already in place to continue our activities for the 25-26 financial year and we believe funding for 26-27 should be in place by December 2025. We are looking for a strong leader who has an understanding of the voluntary sector, has served as a charity trustee and can work collaboratively with others to ensure the charity continues to thrive and develop.
What are we looking for?
In addition to the general responsibilities of a Trustee, the Chair has a number of tasks specific to their role. They should be able to demonstrate:
Commitment to the organisation Leadership ability, integrity and strategic vision Good/independent judgement Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties as Chair and trustee An ability to take decisions that will be of benefit to the organisation Excellent communication skills Tact and diplomacy They are able to share views openly and listen to the views of others They can work effectively as a member of a team Understanding of the legal responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee
What difference will you make?
As a trustee you will be part of a team and will have the opportunity to add your unique skills and experience while learning from others. The Chair's role is also to work in partnership with the board of trustees, employee and volunteers, helping them achieve the aims of the organisation; and to optimise the relationship between the board of Trustees and the staff/volunteers. Our trustees support and shape our work and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our purpose to improve the lives of survivors of a brain injury.
