What will you be doing?

The Chair plays a crucial role in enabling the charity to fulfil its mission of relieving the needs of people living with dementia and their families by providing regular disco events. The Chair ensures the CIO complies with its constitution, charity law, and best practice in governance, as outlined by the Charity Commission for England and Wales. Strategic Leadership 

Provide leadership to the Board of Trustees in developing and overseeing the implementation of the CIO's strategic plan.  Ensure the CIO's activities align with its objects and strategic priorities.  Guide the Board in setting and monitoring the CIO's goals and objectives.  Represent the organisation externally, enhancing its profile and reputation. 

Governance 

Ensure the CIO is governed in accordance with its constitution, charity law, and best practice.  Chair meetings of the Board of Trustees, ensuring they are conducted effectively and efficiently.  Set the agenda for board meetings, in consultation with the CEO and other trustees.  Promote a culture of good governance, transparency, and accountability.  Ensure that conflicts of interest are identified and managed appropriately, as per the CIO's policy.  Facilitate the recruitment, induction, and development of trustees.  Conduct regular reviews of the Board's effectiveness. 

Relationship with the CEO 

Establish and maintain a strong, effective, and collaborative relationship with the CEO.  Support and challenge the CEO, providing constructive feedback and guidance.  Conduct the CEO's appraisal and ensure their ongoing professional development.  Ensure clear delegation of authority between the Board and the CEO. 

Financial Oversight 

Ensure the CIO's finances are managed responsibly and in accordance with charity law.  Oversee the development and monitoring of the annual budget.  Ensure that appropriate financial controls and reporting mechanisms are in place. 

Compliance / Risk Management 

Ensure the CIO complies with all relevant legal and regulatory requirements.  Oversee the identification and management of the CIO's key risks.  Ensure that appropriate policies and procedures are in place e.g. safeguarding, data protection

What are we looking for?

Essential Skills and Experience 

A strong commitment to the objects and values of Dementia Disco.  Significant experience of operating at a senior level in a charitable, public, or private sector organisation.  Experience of charity governance and an understanding of the role of a trustee.  Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.  Ability to chair meetings effectively and facilitate constructive discussion.  Sound judgement and decision-making skills.  Ability to think strategically and contribute to the development of a strategic plan.  Good understanding of financial management and reporting.  Knowledge of charity law, Charity Commission guidance, and best practice in governance.  Strong commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. 

  Desirable Skills and Experience 

Experience of working with volunteers.  Experience of fundraising and income generation.  Knowledge of the issues affecting people with dementia and their carers.  Experience of representing an organisation externally. 

  Personal Qualities 

Integrity and a commitment to acting in the best interests of the CIO.  Ability to work effectively as part of a team.  Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the role.  Ability to maintain confidentiality.  Good communication and interpersonal skills.
