The British Museum is seeking a Technical, Tax and VAT Accountant to join our Finance department. This role involves preparing returns for key stakeholders such as HMRC and providing technical guidance on VAT, PAYE, gift aid, and foreign tax to the finance team and other departments. The successful candidate will also manage the Museum's investments and act as the systems administrator for our accounting system.

About you: We are looking for a qualified accountant with strong technical expertise in VAT, tax, and financial regulation. You should be confident in interpreting legislation, analyzing risk, and explaining complex requirements clearly to non-specialists. You should combine meticulous attention to detail with the ability to manage competing deadlines, stay updated with changing regulations, and support colleagues across various departments. This role requires accuracy, problem-solving skills, and excellent communication.

Key areas of responsibility include reviewing procedures and undertaking analysis to ensure compliance with HMRC guidance and legislation, advising other departments on the tax implications of projects and new initiatives, preparing UK and international tax returns, compiling the year-end audit file for pension scheme accounts, and supporting the administration and development of the Museum's financial systems.
