What will you be doing?
Help us to raise funds for the Trust which is responsible for Shandy Hall (a Grade 1 listed building) in Coxwold, North Yorkshire, the former home of Laurence Sterne. The Trust opens the house and gardens to the public each year. We need someone who can:
research fundraising opportunities write grant-funding applications identify and approach possible sponsors and individual donors suggest and administer other fundraising activities and events.
Experience of the museum/arts sector and of dealing with grant-giving bodies would be an advantage. You will work with the trustees, the Curator and the Lead Volunteer. We are a friendly, supportive and appreciative group of people. There will be opportunities for you to develop the role flexibly, e.g. to develop marketing and communications.
What are we looking for?
We need someone who:
has experience of writing and submitting grant applications knows how to approach potential individual and corporate donors has the skills necessary to set up and run fundraising events and activities is able to work collaboratively can communicate clearly and persuasively.
Knowledge of the charitable sector and arts funding would be helpful.

Fundraising is central to the effective operation of the Laurence Sterne Trust. Your work will help ensure the charity’s financial stability, enabling the continued care of Shandy Hall and its gardens, and supporting the Trust’s core mission: celebrating the life, works, and lasting influence of Laurence Sterne, world-famous 18th-century author of Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey. Sterne was not only a literary pioneer but also an early voice against the slave trade and a correspondent of Ignatius Sancho, making his legacy both culturally and morally significant. As fundraiser, you’ll be part of a committed team supporting the Curator and volunteers who care for the house and gardens, welcome visitors, and deliver a wide-ranging programme of artistic and educational events. By contributing your time and expertise, you’ll be helping a much-loved Yorkshire charity that offers enriching and restorative experiences to a diverse local, national, and international audience.
