The role of the Internal Research Fellow (PostDoc) is an exciting opportunity for early-career scientists and engineers to conduct independent research within ESA's vibrant scientific community. This fellowship allows you to work closely with leading scientists and engineers across various disciplines related to space science, space applications, or space technology. The position offers a unique platform to contribute to cutting-edge research and to support ESA’s ongoing missions.

As a Research Fellow, you will have the opportunity to develop and lead your own scientific projects, with the possibility to spend up to 20% of your time supporting ESA’s science-related activities. The fellowship is initially for two years, with the potential for a third-year extension. You will be part of ESA’s Science Faculty, which supports a broad range of research initiatives and scientific activities.

The role involves engaging in innovative research proposals aligned with ESA’s missions, which include heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics, and fundamental physics. Candidates are encouraged to identify the most relevant research environment among ESA’s establishments in Villanueva de la Cañada (Spain), Noordwijk (Netherlands), or Baltimore (USA).

Applicants must have completed their PhD before starting the fellowship, with preference given to those within five years of obtaining their degree. Strong research/publication records, the ability to conduct autonomous research, and a general interest in space science are essential. Knowledge of English or French is required, and familiarity with additional Member State languages is an asset.

Candidates should prepare a comprehensive application including a motivation letter, CV, list of publications, and a research proposal of no more than four pages. The selection process will evaluate scientific excellence, feasibility, potential impact, and alignment with ESA’s research activities. Successful candidates will undergo background screening and may be asked to participate in selection tests.
