Role Summary:
- Support the development and migration of ESA's Datalabs platform to hybrid, multi-cloud environments.
- Define and implement the platform's architecture.
- Play a key role in design, development, and testing of platform modules.
- Collaborate with different internal and external bodies on various levels.
Role Requirements:
- Background in computer science/software engineering.
- Knowledge of cloud technologies, Kubernetes, DevOps practices and high-performance computing.
- A master's degree in a relevant field. A Ph.D. is an added bonus.
- Experience with cloud providers, data systems, supercomputing initiatives, and space missions is beneficial.

We are excited to offer a position for a Science Operations System Engineer for Cloud Platform within our Data Science Section.
The role involves supporting the development and expansion of the ESA Datalabs platform, particularly its migration to a hybrid multi-cloud environment. This platform is crucial for enabling scientists worldwide to access petabytes of data, leveraging European cloud providers and academic partnerships. The platform also serves as a foundation for machine learning projects, aiming to enhance scientific discovery through advanced data analysis and automation.
As part of your responsibilities, you will define and implement the architecture of the hybrid-cloud science platform, ensuring it meets all functional and technical requirements. You will support the design, development, and testing of platform modules, promote diverse use cases such as data science, citizen science, and science operations, and contribute to the broader data science strategy in collaboration with ESA’s data centers and missions. Additionally, you will act as a Technical Officer for external contracts and industrial services, support interface management with other ESA directorates and international partners, and assist the section head with relevant matters.
Candidates should have a strong background in computer science or software engineering, with knowledge of cloud technologies, Kubernetes, DevOps practices, and high-performance computing. Experience with European cloud providers, large-scale data systems, supercomputing initiatives, and space mission operations is highly desirable. A master’s degree in a relevant field is required, with a PhD being advantageous. Additional assets include experience in machine learning engineering, data warehousing, and managing interdisciplinary teams.
