The British Museum is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable curator to oversee its outstanding collection of British prints and drawings by artists born between 1775 and 1885. This includes iconic works by J.M.W. Turner, John Constable, Beatrix Potter, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and James McNeill Whistler, as well as the vibrant ephemera of Sarah Sophia Banks.

The role involves leading research, exhibitions, and publications related to the collection, while enhancing its online presence through improved records and imaging. The successful candidate will be responsible for engaging audiences of all kinds, supporting public enquiries, acquisitions, fundraising, and Study Room activities. This is a rare opportunity to shape public understanding of a rich period in British art and expand access to one of the world’s most significant collections of 19th-century works on paper.

The role's key responsibilities include assisting with public and scholarly enquiries, sharing specialist knowledge in an engaging manner, maintaining and improving online records of approximately 26,000 drawings and over 145,000 prints, and devising exhibitions based on the British collection. The curator will also be involved in fundraising, supporting museum projects, and guiding acquisitions.

Candidates should have sound knowledge of graphic arts techniques and history, experience in curating exhibitions or gallery displays, a relevant degree in art history or related fields, and strong communication skills. Museum curatorial experience, research ability, and project management skills are essential. Presentation experience in seminars, lectures, or gallery talks is also desirable.

The role is expected to involve on-site work about four days a week, with options for remote work in line with the Museum’s flexible working scheme.
