Volunteer Frontend Developer with strong Python skills

What will you be doing?

In this role, you will experiment with Deck.gl and potentially other visualization libraries/frameworks to design, build, and refine interactive knowledge maps that allow users to explore connections between topics, subtopics, and insights. This is a volunteer position ideal for someone who is passionate about data visualization, knowledge sharing, and experimenting with emerging tools in the open-source/knowledge-tech space. Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with the team to version 2 of our interactive knowledge maps. Explore and implement Deck.gl (and other potential visualization frameworks) for rendering large-scale graph/network data. Integrate frontend visualizations with Python-based backend services and data pipelines. Work with APIs and databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, OpenSearch) to fetch and display structured data. Experiment with interaction features (filters, tooltips, drill-down navigation) to improve the user experience. Contribute to the design discussions, share ideas, and propose creative visualization solutions.

What are we looking for?

Frontend development experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, React, and modern frameworks. Good knowledge of Python, with the ability to integrate backend services and data processing pipelines. Interest or experience in data visualization (D3.js, Deck.gl, Kepler.gl, or similar). Familiarity with graph/network visualization concepts is a plus. Understanding of RESTful APIs and working with structured/unstructured data. Curiosity to explore emerging visualization tools and experiment with design. Bonus: experience with GIS/mapping libraries (Mapbox, Leaflet) or graph databases
