Principles of Intelligence is hiring a Compliance & Operations Manager who will work closely with the Executive Director of Operations to oversee contracts, agreements, and regulatory compliance across the organization and its fiscal sponsees. This role will ensure that the organization and its affiliates and sponsees operate within the bounds of applicable laws (in the US (50%) UK (40%) and elsewhere (10%)), donor requirements, and organizational policies. The role will also work closely with the Operations team to develop and refine contract management systems and serve as the lead for ensuring that all organizational and sponsee activities are compliant with legal and donor policies.

Position Details Location: Remote. This role will be expected to come to Belgrade, Serbia for three weeks in September for onboarding, after which the work is remote.

Visa / Work authorization: We can provide visa sponsorship for candidates based in (or relocating to) London (UK) and Berkeley / Bay Area (US), depending on candidate circumstances and role fit.

Type: Full-time.

Start date: August 2026.

Salary range: Salary is dependent upon location and experience. Our estimated range is $55,000-$75,000 gross.

Core Responsibilities Develop and maintain a centralized tracker for all active contracts and agreements for Principles of Intelligence, monitoring key dates (start/end, renewal windows), deliverables, and associated payments to ensure nothing is missed Oversee onboarding and offboarding of employees, and manage their employment status in Deel (PEO for US employees, EOR for overseas employees) Monitor fiscal sponsee activities to ensure onboarding, work, expenditures, travel, and reporting remain in line with donor policies, grant terms, and are applicable U.S. and U.K. legal requirements Work closely with Operations team and Accountant to ensure all organizational contracts, partnerships, and agreements, and any expenditures adhere to relevant country, state, and donor policies Ensure contracts, agreements, and policy acknowledgments are properly executed and documented Continuously improve knowledge management systems and processes for contract and compliance documentation, making policies and agreements easy to reference across the team Ensure that we are not in breach of regulations such as GDPR, and monitor the regulation landscape to ensure we are compliant with relevant legislation This role is fully remote, so we’re looking for people who can thrive in an async environment and are genuinely excited to work on AI safety.

Requirements You are ideal for the role if: You are excited to take a rapidly growing organization through professionalization of HR and compliance, setting up processes such that scientists can do their good work while we take care of the rest. You are proactive in pointing out problems and want to create systems that can work through the growth. You enjoy making a friendly environment rather than a restrictive one, while making sure everything is above board. You know how both the US and UK systems work well enough to check the documents if they need to be passed on to lawyers or can be approved internally. You prioritize impact over “how things were done before” and have an understanding of the needs of a rapidly growing org that cares about impact instead of profits. (Ideally) You worry about AI risks but know how to use AI responsibly to make systems work better, or are interested to learn this skill.

Must have Hands-on experience managing contract lifecycle management, including tracking agreements, renewal windows, and deliverables across multiple active contracts, ideally in a small or lean organization Working knowledge of donor restrictions, grant terms, and reporting requirements HR/employment operations experience, including onboarding/offboarding workflows and employee records in a PEO or EOR context U.S. legal and regulatory literacy and functional understanding of employment law, multi-state compliance requirements, and basic contract law

Great to Have Exposure to U.K. legal/regulatory exposure Experience with knowledge management tooling, including Notion, Airtable, or similar Understanding of the operational realities of small nonprofits Paralegal training or equivalent practical experience International contractor/vendor management experience

Benefits and Salary Your starting salary range depends on role, prior experience, and location. Our estimated range is $55,000-$75,000 (gross).
