Communications Manager (maternity cover - part time, flexible hours)

Lion Landscapes is a dynamic large carnivore conservation and research organisation that works with local communities and other conservation stakeholders to develop programmes that support large carnivores, their prey, their habitat, and local people. Lion Landscapes is affiliated with Oxford University’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) but operates independent programmes in Kenya and Tanzania. 

We are seeking a skilled, proactive and organised Communications Manager to cover a period of maternity leave on a part time (approximately 20 hours per week basis). The role involves managing and elevating all aspects of external and internal communications and is responsible for shaping and delivering consistent, impactful messaging across channels and overseeing key communications systems and processes. The Communications Manager plays a key role in strengthening our public narrative, ensuring effective internal coordination and management of stakeholder relationships, and raising the visibility of Lion Landscapes among diverse audiences.

Main Responsibilities

• Contribute to and deliver Lion Landscapes' communications strategy, working with the Senior Fundraising Lead and Senior Leadership Team, translating it into a practical content calendar and plan.
• Oversee all communications channels (website, newsletters, social media, print) to ensure consistent tone, style and brand identity.
• Develop compelling narratives for donor reports, grant applications, and impact reporting, tailored to funders, communities, partners, media and policymakers.
• Lead external communications, including newsletters, blog posts, press statements and media liaison, and identify opportunities to raise Lion Landscapes' public profile.
• Act as the central point of coordination for internal content flow, keeping teams' updates and the content calendar on track.
• Support development of internal communications materials and resources for the Senior Leadership Team.
• Produce communications materials for field programmes and team attendance at meetings and events.
• Monitor communications performance and use the findings to improve content and engagement.

Experience and Skills

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or media, ideally within a non-profit, conservation, or international development context.
• Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with a strong ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences and platforms.
• Proven experience shaping and delivering communication strategies that drive audience engagement and strengthen organisational visibility.
• Experience in managing media relations, including drafting press releases and handling media enquiries.
• Strong interpersonal and project management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and work collaboratively across teams and departments.
• Experience with communications analytics and reporting to measure impact and inform strategy is desirable.
• Familiarity with communications for fundraising, including donor reporting and grant narratives, is a strong advantage.
• Understanding of or commitment to conservation, community-centred development, and equitable storytelling approaches.

Position Details

• Part-time position (minimum 20 hours per week, but there is flexibility to discuss alternative working patterns, including potential for full time)
• Salary indication: £30,000 - £35,000 FTE
