Greater Change - Chief Marketing Officer

In the last 3 years Greater Change has grown into a leading social enterprise, building technology that helps people leave homelessness behind for good. So far, we've supported over 400 people experiencing homelessness across Oxfordshire, London, West Sussex and Essex. In 2019 we supported 25 people, in 2020 we supported 136 people and in 2021 we supported 239 people. Of these people, so far, over ⅔ have left homelessness behind long term.

Greater Change was incubated by one of the UK’s most respected charities, Aspire Oxfordshire, (Guardian Charity of the year 2014) as well as Oxford University Innovation. Additionally, we’ve attracted grant funding and social investment from some of the biggest names in the sector. GC has received extensive press coverage including on certain days being in the most read Guardian articles and the most watched BBC video.

Chief Marketing Officer Responsibilities

  • The overarching high level target will be to sustainably and exponentially grow our donations from individuals.
  • You will report directly to the CEO and be responsible for agreeing marketing budgets with the CEO.
  • You will lead the annual marketing strategy.
  • You should be confident in analysing digital marketing data eg. using Google Analytics and Facebook Pixel to generate insights that lead to improvements in marketing.
  • We would expect a particular focus on the donor experience. This includes all of a donor’s interactions with Greater Change. For example, through our website, email, letters and social media. You will need to create the best experience possible for a donor. You will need to develop a good understanding of our donor’s way of thinking and also manage gathering content that can become marketing material from clients we support.
  • You will be ultimately responsible for the core brand that we present in all elements of external communications.
  • You will manage the marketing team which currently consists of 2 employees. Greater Change’s team is growing fast so you should expect the marketing team to grow.
  • Greater Change currently uses a paid marketing agency to run ads on Google and Facebook, as CMO we will expect you to work with the marketing team to optimise this relationship.

Essential Skills

  • You must be hard working and passionate. You will have significant control over your schedule and our hours are reasonable, but we are not looking for someone who wants a ‘cog in a machine’ 9-5 job.
  • The key skill is to be proactive and energetic. We are looking for someone who can be given a high level target, take the initiative to figure out the best way to achieve this target, then execute their plan.
  • You will be managing a small team, you don’t need to have managed people before, but you do need to be a good communicator with an empathetic attitude.
  • You should have a desire to work in a fast growing organisation and an entrepreneurial attitude.
  • You should have the skills necessary to help the marketing team upskill and progress.
  • Strong organisational skills are required.

Nice to Haves

  • At least 3 years experience in a marketing or communications role or within a startup (ideally in marketing, growth hacking or communications).
  • Clear evidence of growing a marketing function. Ideally this would be with regards to revenue, but it can also be growing a mailing list, useful website views etc.

What we Offer

  • A competitive salary £33,000 - £45,000 depending on experience.
  • An extremely high level of responsibility, you will be working towards a high level target and have the freedom to achieve it in the way you see fit.
  • Expert mentors - C Level FTSE 100, PE executives, people who have started and exited tech startups as well as more traditional businesses.
  • Flexible office with opportunity to work from home or the office personalised to your requirements.
  • £400/year wellness budget to spend on anything to help your wellbeing and mental health.
  • A company laptop.
  • A company phone.
  • A high level of autonomy and exposure to all areas of running a successful startup.
  • The opportunity to make a real difference to society as well as to genuinely enjoy and be passionate about what you do!

Application Process

  • Submit your CV and cover letter (no more than a page) through Escape The City by 10 00pm on 8th March 2022.
  • Rounds 1 & 2 will be held on 9th and 10th March. However, if you submit your application more than 5 days before the deadline, we will give you the opportunity to do rounds 1 and 2 at a mutually convenient time before 9th March. Round 3 will be held on either the 11th or 14th March. Interviews will be held on weekdays, but we can accommodate any time in the evening if you need the interviews to be outside of the working day.
  • Round 1 is a 30 minute interview with one of the founders. This will cover past experience, achievements and examples of you taking initiative.
  • Round 2 is a 1 hour interview with both founders. We will present you with questions on how to improve the donor experience and would like to hear your initial thoughts.
  • Round 3 will involve creating a presentation covering 3 steps you would take to increase donations from individuals. We understand that this round involves a significant time commitment. We will therefore limit the number of candidates in this round to 4 people and pay you for your time spent in this round regardless of whether you are successful.
  • Start date: ASAP, whilst we are looking for someone asap, we are able to accommodate the notice period you may need to give your current employer.
