What will you be doing?
Scouts have been actively supporting young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society for over 100 years. We, Braid District Scout Council, are looking to appoint new Trustees to join our Board.
Our Board comprises between five and 12 Trustees, the number determined by Council annually. Trustees are all volunteers, with our Board make of a range of ages – 19 to 70+, experience – uniformed and non-uniformed members. We met as necessary, but normally once a quarter for 1.5 hours. We also join the Council’s annual general meeting. Trustees may join sub committees and will require some personal time for reading of papers, etc.
We are seeking Trustees who are strategic thinkers, collaborative, constructive, and able to act as charity ambassadors. We are keen to broaden the range of skills and experiences which comprises the Board’s makeup.
What are we looking for?
We are seeking Trustees who have the following personal qualities:
- Commitment and Enthusiasm: A genuine passion for Scouting and a willingness to dedicate time to the role.
- Strategic thinkers: The ability to focus on the "big picture," such as the long-term strategy, rather than getting caught up in day-to-day operations.
- Curiosity and Inquisitiveness: A willingness to ask challenging, sometimes difficult, questions to ensure the Scout District is performing well.
- Objectivity and Independence: The ability to make impartial decisions that are in the best interest of the charity, avoiding conflicts of interest.
- Teamwork and Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with other board members and the operations team volunteers.
- Respectful Challenger: Being a "critical friend" who can provide constructive challenge to the Board.
The Board are keen to broaden the level of expertise our Trustees bring. We are particularly keen to seek those with experiences external to Scouting. We are interested in hearing from people who have knowledge, skills, and experience in:
- Income diversification and fundraising
- Social justice
- Finance / Treasurer experience
- Legal & Governance / Scottish Charity law
What difference will you make?
Good governance is a key factor to our continuing success as a Scout District. It enables our leadership teams to ensure that local scouting is complaint with the Scouts policies, organisation and rules; Scottish law, and OSCR regulations. Our Trustees, through their governance duties, support everyone providing exciting programmes and experiences for all our youth members.
Anything else...
The amount of time you will need to give depends on what you are helping with. Our Board usually meets quarterly for 1.5 hours. Some personal time is needed which depends on how involved you become.
