What will you be doing?

We’re a children’s bereavement charity that preserves memories through bespoke storybooks and legacy paintings. As we grow, we’re bringing in more volunteers to help with a range of projects. I oversee all of them, and finding time to recruit and interview properly is one of the things I struggle with most. We’d love a volunteer to take this on, so that every new person we welcome is a great fit for the charity.

Your key responsibilities will be:

1. Conducting interviews
This is the heart of the role. You’ll hold friendly, informal interviews with potential volunteers, usually by video call, to find out about their skills, motivation and availability, and to make sure they feel comfortable with our work. Because we support bereaved children, we need people who are sensitive, reliable and thoughtful.

2. Reviewing applications
You’ll look through applications as they come in, shortlist promising candidates and arrange interviews.

3. Keeping candidates informed
You’ll be the friendly first point of contact for applicants, sending clear, timely updates so nobody is left waiting and everyone has a positive experience, whether or not the role is right for them.

4. Giving feedback and recommendations
After each interview, you’ll share a short summary and your recommendation, so we can make decisions quickly. The final decision will be made together.

5. Helping us improve how we recruit
If you have ideas, we’d love to hear them. You might suggest better interview questions, a simple scoring approach or clearer role descriptions.

What you’ll deliver:

  • Interviews with shortlisted candidates
  • Brief written feedback on each candidate
  • A shortlist and recommendation for each vacancy
  • Suggestions for improving our recruitment process, where you see opportunities

How we work:
We’re a small, friendly charity. This role is fully remote with flexible hours, and interviews can be arranged around your availability. The amount of work will vary depending on how many volunteers we’re recruiting, so there’s no expectation of fixed weekly hours.

You’ll work directly with me. I’ll give you background on the charity, our projects and the kind of volunteers we need, along with any templates or guidance that would help. We’ll also talk you through the sensitivities of our work, so you feel confident when speaking to candidates.

This role is ideal for:

  • Retired HR, recruitment or management professionals
  • People with experience of interviewing or managing teams
  • Anyone looking to build recruitment and people skills for their CV

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for someone who is good with people and enjoys finding the right person for the right role. You don’t need to have worked in a charity before, and we welcome applicants from many backgrounds.

You might be:

  • A retired HR professional, recruiter or manager
  • Someone with experience of interviewing, hiring or managing teams
  • A volunteer coordinator, team leader or training professional
  • Someone looking to move into HR or recruitment and wanting practical experience
  • Anyone with strong people skills who is keen to learn

Important to us:

Experience of interviewing or assessing people. Ideally, you’ve interviewed candidates before, in a paid role, as a volunteer or as part of a panel. You’ll know how to put people at ease and ask questions that bring out the best in them.

Good judgement. You can spot strengths, motivation and potential, and you’re comfortable giving a clear, balanced recommendation.

A sensitive and empathetic approach. Our work centres on children’s bereavement. You don’t need experience in this area, but you must be able to talk about it with care and respect, and to recognise when someone is right for it.

  • Experience of safer recruitment practices, or willingness to learn them
  • Experience of recruiting volunteers
  • Confidence writing clear, friendly emails
  • Familiarity with video calling and basic document sharing

If you don’t have all of these, that’s fine. We’ll give you background on the charity and its projects, plus any guidance that would help.

Personal qualities:

  • Warm, friendly and approachable
  • A good listener and clear communicator
  • Fair and open-minded
  • Organised and reliable, able to manage your own time
  • Discreet, as you’ll be handling candidates’ personal information
  • Comfortable working independently from home

Practical details:
You’ll need a computer, a reliable internet connection and a quiet space for video interviews. The role is fully remote with flexible hours, and interviews can be scheduled around your availability.

What we offer you:
You’ll be part of a small, friendly team that values your input. It’s a chance to put your skills to meaningful use, gain current experience for your CV and make a real difference to bereaved children and their families.

If you enjoy bringing out the best in people and want your skills to count, we’d love to hear from you.

What difference will you make?

Your work will give us something we’re short of: time.

Freeing up time for what matters
I oversee all of the charity’s projects, so recruitment often gets squeezed in around everything else. When that happens, promising volunteers can wait too long for a reply, and opportunities for the charity can slip by. With your help, every applicant will get a prompt, professional and friendly response, and I can focus on the projects that directly support bereaved families.

Bringing in the right people
Our work is sensitive. We create bespoke books and legacy paintings that help children keep precious memories alive, so the people we work with need to be caring, dependable and a good fit. A thoughtful interview process helps us find volunteers who will flourish and stay with us, which means more stability for our projects and for the families we support.

Growing our capacity
More volunteers means more can be achieved, whether that’s developing our school workshops, selling books to raise funds or supporting our creative work. By making recruitment smooth and efficient, you’ll help us grow our team and extend our reach to more children and families.

A better experience for volunteers
Volunteers who feel welcomed and valued from their first conversation are more likely to enjoy their role and give their best. You’ll help us make that first impression a good one.

What you’ll gain

  • A chance to use your interviewing and people skills for a cause that matters
  • Recent, relevant experience for your CV
  • Insight into how a small charity grows and develops its team
  • The satisfaction of seeing the people you recommend make a difference

Whatever time you can give, your contribution will have a lasting effect. By helping us find the right people, you’ll help us continue to support bereaved children and families when they need it most.

Anything else...

It would be great if you were available to contact by message if there were any emergent issues but there are no set times that you must be available.
