This is a voluntary position to join the board of Trustees for our charity at a really exciting time as we induct our new operations team members. We're a small, special outdoor site in Wandsworth with a talented team and supportive board of Trustees.

The current commitment for this Trustee position is a monthly meeting (2 hours, online with at ad hoc in-person meetings) moving to quarterly meetings this year, and the lead for the HR responsibilities for the charity, given below which is usually a time commitment of c.2 days per month (flexibly spread across the month to fit around your commitments) We also hope that all members of our Trustee team will get involved in the community garden itself throughout the year, attending volunteer mornings and community days as diaries allow.

We would expect the successful candidate to commit to at least 12 months in role, up to a maximum of 5 years as a Trustee. Notice period for all trustees is 3 months to allow for handover.

Responsibilities: 

Ensuring the charity meets statutory requirements for HR for The charity has a small team of people, all of whom work part-time: Head of Education, Head of Community Growing, Head of Community Development and a team of Assistant Education leaders.

  • Recruitment activity including the responsibility for ensuring the charity follows its safer recruitment policy including overseeing DBS checks
  • Ad-hoc employment law advice
  • Maintenance and upkeep of team records, updating when required
  • Long-term workforce strategy and planning with lead Trustee for finance and chair of Trustees
  • HR policy development
  • Supporting the team leader with advice on team management
  • Being an active and supportive member of the board of Trustees, enabling good governance of the charity

Person specification:

Essential:

  • You’ll be someone with a passion for community initiatives who wants to help a small charity develop into its next chapter
  • Chartered CIPD qualified, or working towards a qualification
  • HR professional experience, either current or previous employment
  • Collaborative, supportive and pragmatic in applying HR best practice in a small charity

Desirable:

  • Wandsworth resident
  • Good knowledge of safeguarding / safer recruitment processes (training will be provided if this is not part of your experience)
  • Keen on being outdoors and food growing in a beautiful community space!
