How You’ll Contribute
The Explorer Engagement team identifies, develops, and empowers the National Geographic Society’s extensive community of National Geographic Explorers who are researchers, conservationists, educators, technologists, and storytellers. Through training, mentorship, resources, Explorer elevation, and Explorer community activation, our team supports a network of passionate changemakers who are leading priority conservation and exploration programs across the Society. The division comprises three departments: Explorer Programs, International, and Exploration Technology. The Explorer Programs team is further divided into four areas: Capacity Development, Explorer Community, Elevated Explorers and Explorer Management.
The Explorer Management team serves a critical role at the Society as a catalyst for our Explorers’ long-term potential to illuminate, influence and inspire. We serve as primary liaisons between our global Explorer Community and key stakeholders across National Geographic, Disney and external platforms to strategically amplify the Explorers’ voices and accelerate the impact of their work - in support of both the individuals and the Society’s vision.
The Coordinator, Explorer Management provides critical administrative and relationship management support to the Explorer Management team on the day-to-day management of our priorities and team needs and assists with general administration for the broader Explorer Engagement team. You will host Explorers visiting our HQ, coordinate Explorer travel, payments and contracting, develop pitch materials for review and summary reports, contribute talent ideas for Explorer amplification opportunities (Ex. editorial features, social media content, on-camera opportunities, speaking engagements), serve as a first point of contact for all internal and external inquiries, and support other activities related to amplifying our Explorers across a diverse group of constituents.
The successful candidate will bring an instinct for thoughtful relationship management, an interest in talent identification, a collaborative and flexible mindset, steadfast resourcefulness, and a passion for helping people who are on the front lines of generating solutions to and telling stories about the world’s most pressing issues.
The position reports to the Director, Explorer Management.
Your Impact Responsibilities Include:
Administrative Support (30%)
- Serve as a first point of contact for internal and external inquiries.
- Provide ongoing general administrative and program support.
- Book travel and coordinate logistics for Explorers’ travel.
- Coordinate the submission of expenses and Explorer honorarium payments.
- Support Explorer-related events, such as our annual Explorers Festival.
- Attend meetings and take notes for transparency across the Explorer Management team.
- Administrative support for the broader Explorer Engagement team, as needed.
- Own the quality control process for all materials generated and shared by our team.
Explorer Elevation & Deployment (20%)
- Support the Explorer amplification process by suggesting Explorer talent to be considered for editorial, social media and speaking opportunities on National Geographic and Disney platforms.
- Collaborate with Grants & International colleagues to identify new Explorers who have demonstrated communication and storytelling skills with an interest in engaging with the Society.
- Contribute insights and feedback to support the refinement of the team’s Explorer elevation and deployment processes.
- Support the planning and execution of the Closer Look Explorer presentation series.
- Create and distribute Explorer talent pitch materials.
Systems, Tracking, Operations and Data Management (30%)
- Enter, review and update relevant data for Explorers in the CRM.
- Support the socialization and enforcement of the Explorer Management strategy and processes to ensure transparency, communication and adoption of processes.
- Support the identification and tracking of metrics to continuously monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of Explorer Management's efforts.
- Work closely with the team to assist with metrics management and reporting.
Relationship Management (20%)
- Collaborate with colleagues to coordinate targeted outreach to Explorers with whom we need to newly connect to explain our team’s role and understand more about their storytelling and communication interest and experience.
- Coordinate the logistics for Explorers visiting NGS HQ and serve as their host during the visit.
What You’ll Bring
Educational Background
Undergraduate degree preferred or equivalent work experience.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
2+ years of professional administrative experience supporting programs, communications/storytelling, talent management and/or outreach. International experience is a plus.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
- Experience or a demonstrated interest in talent cultivation and talent pitching as well as placement for events and speaking opportunities.
- Demonstrated ability and strong capacity to work on and prioritize several projects at one time in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities/conditions.
- Highly effective written and oral communication skills essential, including the ability to synthesize large amounts of information in an easily digestible format.
- Resourceful and has a collaborative spirit.
- A keen eye and enthusiasm for details and data management.
- Knowledge of science, communication, storytelling or media.
- Ability to work effectively as part of an internal team and with all levels of staff.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with Microsoft Office and G-Suites and Mac operating systems. Demonstrated experience or aptitude for creating presentations in PowerPoint and Keynote.
- Experience working within and optimizing databases including the ability to source, capture and synthesize information effectively. Salesforce knowledge is a plus.

Hybrid - This position has been designated Hybrid, meaning your position will be performed from NGS Base Camp three fixed days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and can be performed remotely for two fixed days a week (Monday and Friday).
