We’re looking for a smart and dedicated Fisheries Scientist to join our team. You will have quantitative statistical analysis and experimental design and analytical competencies. The position will appeal to someone with a keen interest in natural science as well as a desire to understand how things work. Experience of working on fishing boats and catch sampling are a MUST HAVE as the role will involve conducting trial and at sea sampling. The successful person will have the ability to think on their feet and problem solve in real time around scientific, practical and human challenges, and buy into our vision for inventing technologies to create sustainable oceans. What is the job?
We are conducting fishing trials where we are gathering catch and oceanographic data with our products and need this data to be collected in a robust manner analysed to understand the outcomes and presented so as to inform our decision making for optimisation and maximum positive impact.
Responsibilities
- Experimental design for trial of our products.
- Project management duties ensuring that the work plan is delivered on time and to budget
- At sea operation of our hardware and catch sampling
- Interpret data, analyse results using statistical techniques and provide ongoing reports
- Produce reports and present results in different media.
- Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimise statistical efficiency and quality
- Interact with project partners to encourage and motivate them to deliver on commitments.
- Represent SNTech at Scientific and industry events such as ICES and fishing exhibitions
- Work with SNTech colleagues to prioritise business and information needs
- Provide feedback and insight on the development of fit for purpose precision fishing technologies and services.
We expect...
- You understand and have undertaken experimental design
- You have knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for curating and analysing datasets (Excel, R, SPSS, SAS etc). Experience with R is preferred
- You have strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organise, analyse, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
- You are adept at queries, report writing and presenting findings
- You have worked on fishing boats and will be comfortable running a trial alongside the crew for periods up to 10 days.
