Role Summary

  • Lead a review of existing datasets and develop recording and mapping strategies for Sherwood's ancient trees.
  • Develop and test survey methodologies.
  • Build strong relationships with project partners, stakeholders, and landowners.
  • Contribute to the project's technical direction and stakeholder engagement.

Role Requirements

  • Strong biological recording skills.
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping and spatial analysis.
  • Deep understanding of ancient and veteran tree ecology.
  • Experience advising on woodland conservation, arboriculture, or forestry.
  • Skilled communicator who can represent the Trust.
  • Full driving license and ability to travel.

The Woodland Trust is the UK's leading woodland conservation charity, dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of Britain's native woodland heritage. We are excited to announce an opportunity for an Ancient & Veteran Tree Officer to join our Sherwood's Living Legends project, which is generously funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This project aims to protect the ancient and veteran trees of Sherwood Forest and reconnect the community with this iconic landscape.

The role: As the Ancient & Veteran Tree Officer, you will lead the review and consolidation of existing datasets to develop a comprehensive strategy for recording and mapping ancient and veteran trees across the Sherwood NCA. You will also develop and test robust survey methodologies and build strong relationships with project partners, landowners, and stakeholders. Your efforts will help shape the project's technical direction and ensure high-quality engagement with landowners.

Job requirements: The ideal candidate will have strong biological recording skills, proficiency in GIS mapping and spatial analysis, and a deep understanding of ancient and veteran tree ecology. Experience in advising landowners within woodland conservation, arboriculture, or forestry is essential. You should also be a skilled communicator, capable of representing the Trust in various settings, and have a full driving license with the ability to travel widely.
