The Championships Manager, in partnership with the Director of Golf Development, manages all operational efforts of the three Championships conducted by the Masters Tournament Foundation (MTF) – the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC), the Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC) and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA). In addition, this role leads the year-long conduct and planning of the Drive, Chip and Putt (DCP) initiative. The position will also create and manage growth of the game initiatives in the local community designed to further interest in the game of golf and will support other Tournament Headquarters staff with respect to the conduct of the Masters Tournament.Supervisory

Responsibilities:

Directly supervises employees, including the Championships Coordinator and third-party vendors who are contracted to support MTF events around the globe, while carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Club’s policies, procedures and applicable laws. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: interviewing, hiring and training event workforces; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Evaluate and implement MTF work processes to ensure ongoing continuous improvement. 
  • Lead all operational discussions and outside the ropes efforts for the AAC, LAAC and ANWA by liaising with host venue staff and in-market vendors.
  • Ensure all goals and objectives for site and planning visits are established and clearly communicated to ensure proper organization of events and efficient use of MTF resources.
  • Manage the acquisition efforts for equipment and supplies for MTF events including, but not limited to cell phones, radios, copiers, temporary offices, signage, golf carts, vehicles, etc.
  • Works in conjunction with other THQ staff and departments to coordinate all travel and ground transportation for participants and officials at MTF events.
  • Manage the competitive schedule of events for the AAC and LAAC, including all practice rounds, competitive rounds, partner outing activities, special events, rules committee meetings and other general tournament events. Construct the official pairings for AAC, LAAC and ANWA based on input from various stakeholders, including television partners.
  • Partner with various government agencies to ensure all personnel and equipment needed for the Championships are approved for immigration and customs entry for the AAC and LAAC.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with the Rules Committee at the AAC and LAAC.  In this role, coordinates with the R&A and USGA on potential rules challenges, committee needs, course setup and evacuation plans.
  • Partner with the Director of Golf Development in developing and managing relationships with international golf associations that participate in MTF events.
  • Direct the Tournament Headquarters administrative staff and in-market Tournament coordinators in regards to event correspondence to various stakeholders that assist or participate in MTF events.
  • Develop and execute approved strategy for Drive, Chip and Putt by representing Augusta National Golf Club as a Task Force member for the initiative.
  • Lead coordination efforts with the USGA and PGA of America to establishing qualifying sites and pathways; coordinating qualifying toolkit construction and distribution; procuring and managing the distribution of participant awards; organizing and conducting digital training sessions for DCP registration and scoring systems, and managing advancement of participants through the qualifying system.
  • Work with other DCP leadership to recruit, train and acquire volunteers for the conduct of the DCP National Finals competition.
  • Recruit and train DCP qualifying site administrators throughout the year and at the annual PGA Merchandise Show.
  • Attend and assist in the administration of DCP Regional final qualifying.
  • Work with other THQ staff to organize all aspects of the onsite participant experience for the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and DCP National Finals.
  • Liaise with the Director of Golf Development to determine strategy for the successful advancement of all MTF initiatives including budgeting and financial planning
  • Be a lead contributor in the Club’s efforts to affect the Community by creating and executing golf initiatives that influence local junior, high school and underrepresented group participation within the Augusta area.
  • Drive the strategy and development of elite golf programming within the local community by managing relationships with local collegiate programs including Paine College and Augusta University.
  • Assist with other departments to ensure the success of various social functions at MTF events.
  • Create and maintain Championship Operations documents and manuals in an effort to streamline and document event procedures in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Provide additional support to the Tournament Headquarters staff by assisting with data research and special projects as determined by the Director of Golf Development.
  • Assist and support other Tournament Headquarters staff with other general Masters Tournament activities as needed and based upon availability.

Minimum Requirements (required unless otherwise stated):

                Skills/Knowledge/Ability:

  • Ability to use financial analysis to generate strategic operational opportunities.
  • Professional and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with accuracy and utilize effective judgment under the pressure, to include time sensitive deadlines.
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to work independently and confidently.
  • High attention for detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of Google Maps or similar software.
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based computer programs including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

                Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent years of experience required preferably in Business, Sports Management, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 plus years previous golf administration preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience preferred
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with the Rules of Golf and competition administration as well as experience serving as a member of various Rules committees.

Required License(s):

  • Possesses a valid driver’s license and/or successfully completes the Club’s internal motor vehicle training program
  • Must possess a valid passport
  • Must be willing and able to submit to health and safety screenings required for international travel including vaccination programs and COVID-19 training

Work Environment

However, the employee may be required to work outside in extreme heat, cold, rain, wind or inclement weather as the demands of the position so dictate.

Positions at Augusta National Golf Club require a COVID-19 vaccination. Applicants who are offered a position will be asked their vaccination status, which will be considered in accordance with applicable law.

Projected Work Schedule

Normal work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Must be available to work weekends, holidays and overtime as dictated by the needs of the business.

Travel approximately 60 days a year to domestic and international locations in order to conduct MTF competitions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk and work with hands and arms, lift up to 25 pounds and/or drive a golf cart. The employee is frequently required to talk and/or hear. The employee is constantly required to use their vision to perform an activity such as, but not limited to: preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading. The employee is constantly required to sit, sometimes for several hours at a time, and use their hands and fingers to operate a computer.

This position will require approximately 55-60 days of domestic and international travel. The employee must be able to endure lengthy international flights (up to 16 hours at a time) and be able to adjust to rapid changes in time zones and climates.
