ESA is committed to diversity and inclusivity in the workforce, offering a supportive and enriching working environment.

Role Summary

  • Participation in the system engineering and satellite engineering aspects of the CHIME project.
  • Define and implement algorithms for estimation of uncertainties in Level 1 and 2 data products.
  • Utilize software tools like the CHIME end-to-end simulator (E2E), the Observation Performance Simulator (OPSI) etc. for validation and testing of data flow.

Role Requirements

  • Should be a university student, preferably at Master's level, with continued enrollment throughout the internship.
  • Good knowledge of English or French, with proficiency in another ESA Member State language as a plus.
  • An engineering background with experience in Python prototyping or modeling. Any familiarity with imaging spectrometry, remote sensing, and basic space system design is a bonus.

Join our Earth Observations Projects Department at the European Space Agency (ESA) and be a part of the pioneering CHIME (Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission for the Environment) project. CHIME is designed to provide routine hyperspectral observations which will aid in sustainable agricultural and biodiversity management, as well as soil property characterization.

The role: As an intern, you will participate in the system engineering and satellite engineering section of the CHIME project. Your responsibilities will include defining and implementing algorithms necessary for estimating per-pixel uncertainties associated with Level 1 and Level 2 data products. You will use tools like the CHIME end-to-end simulator (E2E), the Observation Performance Simulator (OPSI), and other dedicated software to test and validate the data flow from geophysical parameters through the instrument and satellite subsystems up to the final Level 2 data products.

Job requirements: Candidates should be university students, preferably at the master's level, and must be enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship. A good knowledge of English or French is required, and additional knowledge of another ESA Member State language is an asset. Applicants should have an engineering background with experience in prototyping or modeling in Python or an equivalent programming language. Familiarity with imaging spectrometry, remote sensing, and space system design basics is a plus.

Benefits: ESA is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious beliefs, age, disability, or other characteristics. We also accommodate individuals with disabilities whenever possible and provide necessary support at the workplace.
