The European Space Agency (ESA) is a galaxy of opportunity. As an intern in the German Translation Section, your responsibilities would include:

  • Carrying out terminological research
  • Extracting terminology from Agency documents
  • Maintaining and drafting terminology records for ESA's multilingual database

  • A university student, preferably at the master's level and enrolled for the entire duration of the internship
  • Fluent in German, well-versed in English, and familiarity with French and other ESA Member State languages is preferable
  • Experienced in terminology work and knowledgeable of language technologies

Our team and mission at the European Space Agency (ESA) involves the Language Services and Minute-Writing Division (DG-OL), which is tasked with translating and editing official documents, correspondence, and various texts related to the Agency's operations. This includes a focus on scientific, technical, legal, financial, and administrative subjects. Additionally, we are responsible for drafting minutes for meetings of ESA's different bodies. The division utilizes a trilingual terminology database with over 30,000 terms and employs computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and neural machine translation to enhance the translation process. Our team consists of 24 members across three sections: English Translation, Editing and Support Section, French Translation Section, and the German Translation Section.

The role: As an intern in the German Translation Section, you will assist in terminology support. Your tasks will include carrying out terminological research, extracting terminology from Agency documents and other reliable sources in German and English, and maintaining and drafting terminology records for the ESA Termbase, our multilingual terminology database.

Job requirements: Candidates must be university students, preferably at the master's level, and must prove enrollment at their university for the entire duration of the internship. Native-level proficiency in German and a thorough knowledge of English are required, with knowledge of French and other ESA Member State languages being an asset. Experience in terminology work and knowledge of language technologies would also be beneficial.
