The European Space Agency (ESA) is seeking a skilled Optical Technology Engineer to join our team in the Optical Technologies Section, part of the Ground Station Engineering Division within the Ground Systems Engineering and Innovation Department. This position is based at our operations directorate in Darmstadt, Germany.

The role: As an Optical Technology Engineer, you will engage in the development and engineering of optical ground stations used for communication, surveillance, and tracking. Your responsibilities will include optical telescope system design, optical subsystems development, and roadmapping technology developments for space missions. You will also support the integration of direct-with-Earth optical communication systems into ground infrastructure and manage industrial contracts related to these technologies.

Job requirements: The ideal candidate will have a master's degree in engineering, physics, or space communication system engineering. You should possess expertise in systems engineering, optical free space and fibre communication, and deep-space optical communication. Experience with high-power laser systems and optical space situational awareness technology is also required.
