Role Summary

Role Requirements

  • A master's degree in spacecraft systems engineering, AIT, electrical engineering, or materials and processes.
  • Experience with space instruments in all project phases, strong system engineering capabilities, and experience in procurement of flight hardware for space instruments.
  • Knowledge of test and verification methods for electrical and electronic components and instrumentation.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with an ability to coordinate teams and projects.

As part of the LISA team in the Projects Department of the Directorate of Science at ESTEC, the Lead Payload Engineer plays a crucial role in advancing our mission to develop the first space gravitational wave observatory, LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna). This mission involves a constellation of three spacecraft designed to detect and measure gravitational waves with unprecedented precision, delivering world-class science and having a significant public and strategic impact.

The role: As a Lead Payload Engineer, you will oversee the development of one or more payload subsystems or units, ensuring they meet the scientific and technical requirements of the LISA mission. You will manage the design, development, and testing activities, coordinating with both internal and external stakeholders, including European institutes and industries involved in the project. Your responsibilities will include supervising the procurement processes, ensuring compliance with the LISA scientific, technical, and programmatic requirements, and providing technical support to the CFI institutes and industry.

Job requirements: The position requires a master's degree in spacecraft systems engineering, AIT, electrical engineering, or materials and processes. Relevant experience with space instruments in all project phases, strong system engineering capabilities, and experience in procurement of flight hardware for space instruments are essential. Additionally, knowledge of test and verification methods for electrical and electronic components and instrumentation is required. Strong interpersonal skills, leadership capabilities, and the ability to effectively manage and coordinate teams and projects are also crucial.
