This is an outstanding opportunity to lead a thriving environmental campaigning organisation that has earned itself a strong reputation for high-impact projects, partnerships and lasting positive change. We’ve worked hard over the last six years to build not only an impactful, financially sustainable organisation, but also an open, inclusive and connected workplace that inspires our culture. Our values inform everything we do, and our passionate team benefit from our authentic and pioneering approach to staff wellbeing.

From tech-powered solutions, petitions and big media campaigns, to grassroots community-led action and game-changing education programmes City to Sea’s award-winning initiatives are helping individuals and organisations reduce single-use plastic and have a measurable, lasting impact. We’re behind:

  • Refill, the UK’s leading community initiative and app helping people live with less plastic;
  • Plastic-free Periods and Rethink Periods, an award-winning campaign and education programme providing training and materials to schools and the NHS;
  • Turning the Tide, an ambitious two-year programme to help Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Seafront reduce single-use plastic.

As Chief Executive, you will develop and deliver the strategic and operational plan to take City to Sea forward, building on our success and growing our work locally, regionally and nationally. You’ll be confident in leading, inspiring and building external relationships, being an ambassador for City to Sea and enhancing our reputation. You’ll also have an excellent track record in business development, managing complex budgets, leading projects, building upon existing and developing new alliances and partnerships.

We’re looking for a visionary, passionate and experienced leader with at least five years' experience in a similar or senior leadership role, sound knowledge of the environmental and/or campaigning sector and great commercial acumen. As the successful candidate, you will bring a blend of creativity, strategy and commerciality, and be well placed at developing products and services that encourage people and business to adopt a more circular approach and use less plastic. You will also be adept at conceiving partnerships and closing deals, comfortable leading an ambitious, collaborative and agile team and ready to subscribe to our mission and values.

We recognise that City to Sea, like much of the environmental sector, is lacking diversity amongst its staff. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and as a Bristol based organisation, we are working particularly hard to be more representative of the city’s 16% Black and minority ethnic demographic, and 17% Disabled demographic.

For this reason, if you are Black, Asian, from a minority ethnic background, or living with a disability, we will guarantee you an interview providing you are able to show you can do the job in your covering letter. We’re passionate about creating an inclusive workplace that celebrates and values diversity. We don’t need you to ‘fit’ our culture, we’d love for you to enrich it.
