The Strategic Programme (SP) is a flagship programme implemented by the Strategy and Management Office

(SMO) in collaboration with Units of Thematic Programmes of the Institute and UNU-IAS partners under the Strategic Period 2020-2024. The Strategic Programme implements a research project on the governance for sustainable

Development focusing on synergies between climate change and sustainable development, budgeting and monitoring & evaluation system for SDGs. The SP, in collaboration with other units and partners of the UNU-IAS, is developing and implementing policy-oriented capacity building and educational programmes such as Post Graduate Degree Specialisation on the Paris Agreement. The SP promotes outreach activities on the knowledge of UNU-IAS through the channel of Global Environment Outreach Centre (GEOC). The GEOC was jointly established by the Ministry of Environment of Japan and UNU. GEOC's main activities include: (i) international partnership building, (ii) partnership building in Japan, and (iii) information sharing and communication.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the UNU-IAS Director and under the direct guidance and supervision of the Head of Programme and Administration, the Programme Coordinator will lead and coordinate the Strategic Programme implemented by the Strategy and Management Office (SMO) of the Institute. The Programme Coordinator will assist the Head of Programme and Administration to lead and coordinate Institute’s academic and administrative activities which will contribute to achievement of the Institute’s Strategic Plan 2020-2024. Specific responsibilities will include:

1. Design, develop and implement new policy tools, programmes, and partnerships to promote the Strategic Programme focusing on the following areas;

  • ·Design, and develop agenda setting, policy tools and new programmes through the project activities on the synergies between climate change and sustainable development, governance for sustainable development, Postgraduate Degree Specilisation on the Paris Agreement, and other key activities through collaboration with other units and partners of the UNU-IAS;
  • ·Design, develop, and implement the Postgraduate Degree Specialisation on the Paris Agreement in close collaboration with Postgraduate Degree and Training Programme (PDT) of the UNU-IAS, including practicum training courses and course works, partnership building with national and international institutions;
  • Enhance coordination among the Units of the UNU-IAS to promote inter-disciplinarity of the project activities;
  • Initiate and develop grant proposals and resource mobilizations for research and project activities;

2. Implement the research, capacity building, and outreach activities in the Strategic Programme focusing on the following areas;

  • ·Design, coordinate and supervise administrative activities of the Strategic Programme, including budget, reporting to donors, personnel and day-to-day-operation;
  • ·Implement the project activities in the Strategic Programme including the Governance for Sustainable Development in close collaboration with the relevant team members;
  • ·Implement communication, outreach and knowledge management of Institute’s products in collaboration with the IAS Communications Team, the Global Environment Outreach Centre and other research projects of the Institute;
  • ·Support the Director and the Head of Programme and Administration by providing talking points and presentation materials for events and conferences, and by coordinating with partners; and

3. Build partnerships and engage stakeholders for scaling up impacts of the project activities focusing on the following areas;

  • Enhance partnerships with other UNU institutes for promoting a UNU wide initiative such as engagement with conferences on the UN Conventions;
  • Build partnerships with both national and international organisations through development and implementation of joint research and capacity building activities;
  • Engage various stakeholders in the project activities of the Strategic Programme through co-organisation of the events and co-creation of research and capacity building projects;

4. Perform other duties as required by the Director and the Head of Programme and Administration.

Education and certification:
Master's degree or equivalent, in a field related to Environmental Science, Social Sciences, International Relations, Development Studies, or Sustainable Development

Experience:


  • At least - 2 years (4 years would be desirable) ofprogressively responsible in an international environment including workingexperience for a government.Experience in working for a UN or other international organisation will beconsidered an added advantage
  • Experiencein preparation and participation for international conferences includingUNFCCC as a national delegation
  • Knowledge and experience on the development andimplementation of international programmes/projects on climate change and sustainabledevelopment in collaboration with a partner organisation across the world

  • Achievementin fundraising and implementation of the projects at global scale
  • Excellent analytical skills as well asdemonstrated ability to multi-task and to manage own workload and scheduleto deliver timely results
  • Organizational skills to coordinate with teammembers and other units within the institute
  • Abilityto work harmoniously in a multicultural environment isrequired
  • Provensensitivity to gender issues

  • A good team player with strong interpersonalskills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multicultural,multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity

Language Requirements:

Excellent communication skills with fluency in both oral and written English and Japanese is essential

Remuneration

UNU offers an attractive, tax exempt compensation package including an annual net salary (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), 30 days annual leave, dependency benefits, pension plan and health insurance scheme. Duration of contract

This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment. The initial appointment will be for one (1) year with the possibility of renewal on a fixed-term appointment basis, subject to satisfactory work performance.

For academic positions, the combined duration of fixed-term appointments with UNU may not exceed six (6) years. The mandatory age of retirement for United Nations staff is 65 years.
