Role Summary

The European Space Agency (ESA) is seeking a qualified Earth Surfaces Active and Passive Microwave Scientist for our Earth Observation Programmes Directorate, specifically within the Earth Surfaces and Interior Section of the Earth and Mission Science Division. This position is based at ESTEC in Noordwijk, Netherlands.

The Organisation: ESA is dedicated to understanding Earth through the Earth Observation Programme. The Earth and Mission Science Division plays a crucial role in the scientific definition, integrity, and quality of research and operational missions. We are committed to fostering innovation and making new discoveries in Earth system science, in collaboration with the scientific community.

The Role: As an Earth Surfaces Active and Passive Microwave Scientist, you will provide scientific expertise to both active and passive microwave remote-sensing missions, including radar altimeters and imaging microwave radiometers. Your responsibilities will include establishing and managing mission objectives and requirements, supporting calibration/validation activities, and initiating scientific studies for mission development. You will also organize science workshops and foster cooperation across various departments within ESA.

Job Requirements: Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant domain and have at least five years of professional experience post-PhD in a relevant scientific discipline, particularly in microwave remote-sensing techniques for observing water surfaces, land/biosphere, and ice. Experience in leading international studies and managing scientific advisory groups is essential.

Benefits: This is a fixed-term appointment for an initial duration of 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years based on performance and organisational needs. ESA offers a stimulating work environment and opportunities for international collaboration.
