The European Space Agency (ESA), a major player in global space science and technology, is on the hunt for a Materials and Processes Engineer. This role is located within the exciting Structures, Mechanisms and Materials Division at the ESTEC in the Netherlands.

Role Summary:

  • Providing technical expertise and consultancy for ESA projects and programmes
  • Focus on composite and metallic materials, bonding and joining processes, material/process relationships, predicting performance, process/product verification, and defect analysis
  • Support the selection of materials and processes for ESA programmes
  • Engage in feasibility studies and evaluation of procurement proposals


Role Requirements:

  • A master’s degree in materials engineering or science
  • Minimum of four years of experience in material science and related manufacturing processes
  • Experience in smart manufacturing, 3D printing and non-destructive inspection
  • A PhD in a relevant field, knowledge of hybrid digital twin, design for manufacturing, or model-based systems engineering for manufacturing systems is an advantage

The European Space Agency (ESA) is seeking a Materials and Processes Engineer to join the Materials, Manufacturing and Assembly Section of the Structures, Mechanisms and Materials Division, Mechanical Department, within the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality. This position is based at ESTEC in Noordwijk, Netherlands.

The role: As a Materials and Processes Engineer, you will provide technical expertise and consultancy to ESA projects, programmes, and general studies in the field of materials and manufacturing processes. Your focus will be on composite and metallic materials, related bonding and joining processes, material/process relationships, predictive performance modelling, process/product verification, defect analysis, and more. You will also support the selection of materials, mechanical parts, and processes for ESA programmes, participate in feasibility studies, project reviews, and the evaluation of procurement proposals.

Job requirements: Applicants must hold a master's degree in materials engineering or science and have at least four years of experience in general engineering and science of materials and related manufacturing processes. Experience in smart manufacturing, such as additive manufacturing/3D printing and non-destructive inspection, is essential. A PhD in a relevant domain and knowledge of hybrid digital twin, design for manufacturing, or model-based systems engineering for manufacturing systems would be considered assets.
