Role Requirements:

  • A PhD in Earth System Science or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience post-PhD in remote sensing applications development or research.
  • Experience in satellite-based remote sensing retrieval techniques, particularly over land surfaces, and their validation.
  • Knowledge of major international initiatives and scientific communities related to Earth Observation and climate research.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is seeking a Climate Applications Scientist to join our Earth Observation Programmes Directorate at the European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT) in Harwell, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. This role is a fixed-term appointment initially for 4 years with the possibility of extension up to 8 years based on performance and organisational needs.

The organisation: ESA is at the forefront of global efforts to understand and combat climate change through satellite-based Earth observation. Our Actionable Climate Information Section serves as the focal point for the agency's climate-related activities, contributing significantly to international climate research and policy-making.

The role: As a Climate Applications Scientist, you will lead a portfolio of projects focusing on land surface analysis. You will be responsible for expanding the use and scientific impact of long-term satellite Earth observation data records for climate science and applications. This includes deriving technical specifications for EO-based information, establishing dialogue with climate user communities, initiating and monitoring R&D projects, and promoting the use of EO data in support of the UNFCCC Global Stocktake commitments.

Job requirements: Candidates must hold a PhD in Earth System Science or a related field and have at least 2 years of post-PhD professional experience in remote sensing applications development, research, or a related position. Experience in satellite-based remote sensing retrieval techniques, particularly over land surfaces, and their validation is essential. Knowledge of major international initiatives and scientific communities related to Earth Observation and climate research is also required.
