The British Museum is seeking a dedicated Curator for the Masterplan project, a significant redevelopment initiative that marks the largest renovation in the Museum's history. Founded in 1753, the Museum boasts a remarkable collection spanning over two million years of human history and culture, including iconic objects such as the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies, and the Sutton-Hoo finds. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a transformative project that will reshape the Museum's Western Range, which houses some of the most significant collections from the ancient Mediterranean, Egypt, and the Middle East.
The successful candidate will be instrumental in delivering the current phase of the Masterplan, focusing on the redevelopment of the Western Range. This involves architectural renovation, redisplaying collections, and developing innovative content for new permanent galleries, interim displays, and pilot projects. The role requires collaboration with various departments and external partners to ensure the project aligns with the Museum’s strategic goals of engaging diverse audiences, showcasing cutting-edge research, and creating inclusive, thought-provoking displays that connect the past with the present.
The Curator will work closely with the Public Engagement team and other Museum colleagues to develop research and curatorial content, support collections development, and contribute to publications. They will also be involved in developing models for stakeholder engagement, managing relationships with local, national, and international institutions, and supporting fundraising efforts. Experience in curating temporary exhibitions or gallery refurbishments, engaging with the public through digital media, and managing projects and teams is essential.
