What will you be doing?

As with all our volunteer roles, we’re flexible in fitting responsibilities to individual strengths and availability. Here's an overview of the type of activity this trustee will be involved in.

Our board is made up of committed volunteers with expertise in engineering, fundraising, and community engagement. Due to the retirement of our previous trustee, we’re looking for a someone to lead our environmental strategy and help us protect and enhance the canal’s natural corridor.

This trustee will guide our approach to biodiversity, sustainability, and compliance — overseeing plans, policies, and partnerships that support wildlife and green space.

They’ll work closely with local authorities and environmental bodies, commission studies, and help us respond to emerging initiatives like Biodiversity Net Gain and Nature Recovery Plans.

They’ll also support our green and ground team volunteers to advise on our work party schedule, ensuring safe, coordinated activity across our sites.

This role is central to our vision of a thriving blue-green corridor — and offers the chance to shape lasting environmental impact.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for someone who brings enthusiasm for environmental issues and a collaborative spirit. While none of the following are essential, the ideal trustee may have:

Skills

  • Confidence in environmental disciplines
  • Ability to operate effectively at board level and guide strategic decisions
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with a range of people
  • Clear verbal, written, and presentational communication

Knowledge and experience

  • Familiarity with the role of an Environment Trustee and the challenges facing the Trust
  • Qualifications or experience in environmental fields
  • Attention to detail and the ability to prioritise under pressure
  • Understanding of health and safety best practice
  • Awareness of equality, diversity, and the importance of fair treatment for all stakeholders

Attributes

  • Alignment with our Trustee Code of Conduct and values
  • High standards of integrity and probity
  • Self-motivation, energy, and enthusiasm
  • A diplomatic, team-oriented approach
  • Organised and effective, with a strong work ethic
  • Personal and professional credibility that inspires confidence

We welcome interest from individuals with lived experience of environmental advocacy, community engagement, or canal restoration — and we’re happy to tailor the role to suit your strengths and availability.

What difference will you make?

By joining our board, you’ll help shape the strategic direction of our work and play a key role in realising our vision: a restored canal corridor that connects communities, supports biodiversity, and creates a navigable gateway to the Birmingham Canal Navigations.

Your leadership will help us protect and enhance this vital green and blue space — turning plans into action and making a lasting difference for wildlife, heritage, and local people.

Anything else...

The Trust is flexible in fitting roles to individuals to acknowledge their desired time commitment.
