What will you be doing?

Strategic direction and oversight  • To set the Helen Bamber Foundation and/or Asylum Aid’s overall strategic direction  • To help define goals and evaluate performance  • To be responsible for the governance of the charity, ensuring that the charity acts in accordance with its governing documents and applicable legislation  • To support and advise the Executive on the vision, direction and management of the charity  Decision making  • To exercise control over the financial affairs of the charity and protect its assets, ensuring that the charity is financially sustainable  • To make decisions at all times in the best interests of the charity  • To attend and contribute to Board Meetings and any relevant Committee meetings  Responsibilities  • To ensure that the charity uses its resources exclusively to further its charitable objects  • To advocate on behalf of survivors and asylum seekers and refugees  • To raise the profile of the charity and act as an ambassador for the charity  • Provide ad hoc support to the CEO and Executive Team

What are we looking for?

All Trustees need to be:  • Committed to the Helen Bamber’s Foundation and/or Asylum Aid’s vision, purpose and values and able to act in a manner consistent with these  • Able to work constructively as part of a small team  • Able to think strategically and have sound independent judgement  • Open minded with a strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and committed to shifting power to people with lived experience and upholding anti-racist practice at all levels  We are also looking for the following specific skills in our new Helen Bamber Foundation Trustees:  • Policy, advocacy, public affairs or strategic communications experience  • Clinical or therapeutic experience (as a practitioner or as an academic) and/or  • Expert human rights experience, ideally we are looking for a lawyer, former Judge or academic  We are also looking for the following specific skills in our new Asylum Aid Trustees:  • Lived experience of being an asylum seeker, refugee or having sought another form of humanitarian protection in the UK, or of statelessness and/or  • Experience in accounting or finance  We value and recognise the powerful insight that lived experience will bring to our Board of Trustees. However, we respect that people’s identity is not defined by their lived experience and we do not expect people to describe their lived experience at any stage during this recruitment process or if appointed as trustee of Asylum Aid.
