Fat Macy's

Careers at Fat Macy's

Founded in 2016 as a social enterprise running pop-up supper clubs and catered events across London, Fat Macy's works with young Londoners living in temporary accommodation. We provide a pathway towards independent living by inviting them to create and curate culinary pop-up events across the capital.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The problem we are tackling is common - in the current socio-economic climate, residents find it increasingly challenging to save money to move on into independent living, due to the bureaucratic benefit system, sanctions and the daily expense of hostel living.

Fat Macy's overcomes this by using the project's profits to create a specified housing deposit scheme for our participants. With every pop-up event, each chef can make an independent and progressive step in saving securely for their future.

The chefs volunteer their time, and in return accumulate credit, paid into a secure deposit fund, which is held until they have saved enough for a deposit. At this point, we require a tenancy agreement and an employment contract before we pay the deposit directly to the landlord of their choice.

WHAT'S THE BENEFIT?

In contrast to many of the existing initiatives within hostel accommodation, Fat Macy's provides a structured opportunity, with a clear and tangible incentive for its participants.

Alongside increasing personal savings, Fat Macy's chefs are trained in vital skills for independent living: food hygiene, cooking, financial planning, curating and running events and practical work experience.

In 2017, we want to take Fat Macy's to the next level of growth. To do this, we need a physical space in which to train our staff, and host events. Find out more and get involved on our crowdfunding page: https://www.spacehive.com/fat-macys

    πŸ– Flexibility
Our hours are flexible, and it is more about getting the work done at the right time than being sat on a desk for 8 hours.

    πŸ“£ Mission & Purpose
We all know that good living conditions are key to both mental health and overall prosperity. The housing crisis in London is well documented - and those who have experienced homelessness can be often trapped in the benefits system. Providing a tangible way to break the benefits trap is a very fulfilling mission.

    β›‘ Employee wellbeing
The management team do everything they can to ensure our wellbeing is looked after and is not some side note that occasionally gets brought up.

    Overall

The mission and approach make coming to work every morning a very fulfilling thing!

    πŸ‘ Inclusivity
People treated with fair opportunities. Offering us all the opportunity to learn, grow and develop

    Overall

Working as a chef it’s hard to find meaningful work that’s got more purpose than just turning tables. Getting to know more about the charity aspect, the trainees, the programme and the excitement of opening a new restaurant is all very positive and rewarding

It is really clear that everyone who is working at Fat Macy's is invested in the social impact that the organisation wants to deliver. I have found the team welcoming, friendly and hardworking.

    πŸ‘ Inclusivity
Fat Macy's is on a journey with embedding Equity, Diversity and Inclusion practise throughout the organisation and I appreciate the fact they are willing to admit where improvements are needed and act to do something about it.

    πŸ“£ Mission & Purpose
The mission and purpose of Fat Macy's is what drew me to apply for my role here in the first place. The mission and purpose brings together the charity arm as well as the business arm.

    Overall

While I do enjoy working at Fat Macy's, it's still a relatively young company and there are parts where more structure would be useful. I think the company is slowly getting there, however, and I do really like the team.
