Hammersley Homes was established to provide support for life, for vulnerable adults who live with enduring mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, and bi-polar disorder. There has been a lot of focus recently on mental health, but mental illness can often be left out of the conversation. As a dynamic and fast-growing organisation, we have built a strong team to manage this project. Members of the organisation have first-hand experience of the need for this Outreach Project. Through supporting a close family member living with a diagnosis of psychosis or other mental illness, they have witnessed the lack of support available in the community for this vulnerable group. Of the organisation's 7 Trustees, 2 have lived experience of supporting relatives with mental illness, and all bring with them transferable skills including business leadership, marketing and PR, work with young offenders and the homeless, advocacy and fundraising. Our Chair also has knowledge and experience in charity governance, having chaired a Board of charity Trustees in the past for many years. Trustees have also attended online training to support them in their role. Every parent of someone who lives with these debilitating conditions, worries always about who will care for their loved one when they are no longer able to – and our answer is “we will”.
