The HankyFamily is a queer-led contemporary art organisation reimagining the historic hanky code as a modern visual language of identity, signalling, and self-expression. Originally exhibited at Brighton Pride in 2000, the work he work as it should do continues to evolve especially looking at gender fluidity and other underground and underrepresented groups.
As the hanky code approaches 50 years of significance, the project is being re-launched with a contemporary edge — led by a formalised coding system, precise colour identities, and a scalable artistic framework. Our ambition is to build a culturally credible, commercially viable brand that spans exhibitions, digital culture, and grassroots revenue, culminating in an internationally touring exhibition by 2027.
Rooted in authenticity, lived experience, and queer history, The HankyFamily sits confidently within the contemporary art space while speaking directly to identity, belonging, and visibility today.
HankyFamily are on a mission to champion the cultural phenomenon that is the gay hanky code, which for the uninitiated is a method employed by gay men to indicate sexual preferences during the 1970s. They want to bring this historical yet contemporary concept to a contemporary audience, by creating a globally recognised brand that spans exhibitions, digital culture and the grassroots community. A recent equity crowdfunding campaign raised over £200,000, which is testament to the wider recognition and support of their mission.
