The Laurence Sterne Trust was originally founded over fifty years ago. It became a CIO in 2018. The Trust owns Shandy Hall in Coxwold, North Yorkshire, which, in the 1760s, was home to Laurence Sterne (1713-1768). Sterne was the world-famous author of Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey. Shandy Hall is a fascinating Grade 1 listed building dating back to the 15th century. The House and its beautiful gardens are open to the public for their benefit and education. Sterne's influence on the development of literature and the other arts has been profound. The Trust seeks to promote the understanding and appreciation of Sterne's life, works and continuing influence. Shandy Hall contains the largest collection of editions of Sterne and related materials anywhere in the world. The Collection is available to the public. The two acres of gardens provide tranquillity, beauty and interest to visitors. Great stress is laid on wildlife gardening for which we have just won a Gold Award from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. The Laurence Sterne Trust thus cherishes our literary heritage, our natural environment in the setting of the listed building and its gardens. It is an amenity which attracts visitors not only from the UK but also from all over the world.
