MAITS is a vibrant charity providing international training and support to the disability and mental health sectors in low and middle income countries. Therapists and special educators volunteer their time to share their expertise with organisations in their own country or abroad. MAITS provides grants to assist with travel and accommodation costs both to the trainers and to trainees. In addition to facilitating face-to-face training MAITS has an ongoing programme of resource development designing tools that assist in the support and inclusion of individuals with particular needs whether it be at home school or elsewhere in the community in low-resource settings.
MAITS was established in 2008 out of a long term relationship between The ZVM Rangoonwala Foundation and Whitefield Schools and Centre London. Several visits had occurred between staff from this special school and disability organisations in India and Pakistan between 2000 and 2006 for the purpose of providing additional training and support to local staff. It was recognised that many professionals in the UK would like the opportunity to do the same but were constrained by finances and commitments at home therefore the idea of setting up an organisation that could arrange and fund short-term training and support visits was formed.
Since then MAITS has broadened out to encourage professionals living in LMICs to skill-share within their own country or region as this model can be more effective and respectful for all parties. MAITS has also shifted the emphasis from training visits being driven by the trainers from the Global North who want to volunteer to being requested by the host organisations themselves. We believe that this encourages a greater sense of ownership and is more sensitive to local need.
The training and support we offer can be divided into three main groups:
(I) Training and resources for generic workers
(II) Continued Professional Development for teachers and allied healthcare professionals
(II) Training to undergraduates as part of their programme
We have developed expertise and resources according to the need and our most popular
requests for training and resources fall into the following categories:
—û Rehabilitation
-Community-based rehabilitation
-Feeding Difficulties
-Development of low cost/low tech equipment
—û Special Education
—û Mental Health
