In recent years, Maidstone, Kent, has faced a significant rise in homelessness and hardship among vulnerable families. The ongoing cost of living crisis has only worsened the situation, with 8.8% of households struggling with food insecurity (source), while the number of rough sleepers has surged by 57.7% (source). Child poverty is also a growing concern. As of 2022/23, 11.7% of children under 16—approximately 4,105 children—were living in absolute low-income families, marking a 1.7% increase from the previous year (source). This rise reflects the increasing vulnerability of young residents and the urgent need for sustained support. Maidstone Homeless Care (MHC) plays a vital role in addressing these challenges. Our Food Bank provides essential supplies to households forced to choose between heating and eating, especially during the harsh winter months. The MHC Day Centre offers a place of respite and support for those sleeping rough or on the brink of homelessness, acting as a hub for essential services and guidance. Meanwhile, our supported accommodation steps in where local councils may struggle to provide housing, helping individuals find long-term, stable solutions to their situation. As homelessness and child poverty continue to rise, the need for services like ours has never been greater. With the right support, we can make a real and lasting difference in the lives of Maidstone’s most vulnerable residents.
