Our Shared Reading groups are open to everyone, but we have found that we have mainly attracted older people, especially those who are isolated or lonely. A trained Reader Leader volunteer reads aloud - usually a story and a poem - with pauses to discuss what is happening. This encourages participants to talk about memories, and feelings, by reflecting on the reading, but there is no requirement to prepare, to read or even to speak - for some people listening and being part of the session is enough. Those who attend regularly have made new friends and connections, and rely on the weekly session as an important fixture in their lives. What our members have said: "The reading groups are a different kind of medicine and it's through them that I've found a way back to life" "I am so glad I saw the poster in the library. Joining this group is the best thing I have done for me for years. [It] has made the world of difference to me, I just love it. Thank you everyone." “I feel I can express my opinions without feeling that I would be judged. I enjoy the positive responses I receive from my group. It makes me feel I belong to something.”
