The Centre is the home of domestic and international arbitration in Scotland. Established in 2011, it promotes the use of Scottish arbitration and the designation of Scotland as a place to conduct arbitration to audiences both at home and abroad. The Centre runs a membership scheme, publishes a sector-focused quarterly e-newsletter, facilitates training, and manages some promotional events. Though this service was disrupted by the pandemic, the Centre normally has facilities, which can be hired for arbitrations, mediations, meetings, and events. The Centre also administers the Convener of School Closure Review Panels and the Panels, statutory review bodies. The Centre has a Board of nine independent Directors and an independent Arbitral Appointments Committee, which can appoint arbitrators. The Centre receives some grant funding from the Scottish Government.
The Centre’s small team of four is led by Chief Executive Andrew Mackenzie, a solicitor seconded from the Scottish Government, who has been with the Centre since its creation in 2011. The vacant Business Development Manager role, a Business Manager, and a part-time administrator complete the team. Though staff benefit from lots of autonomy, the small size of the team requires collaboration, clear and prompt communication, and a willingness to muck in.
