SDN strives to protect human rights and demand responsive governance in the Niger Delta Nigeria where we have operated for a decade. We are an international charity with two office in London and Port Harcourt.

Our work explores the relationship between extractive industries and weak governance whilst our programs support the efforts of those affected by extractive industries weak governance and conflict through rights based community empowerment.

Our work focusses on 5 major thematic areas; grass-roots peace building environment democratisation resource governance & access to energy.

About us

SDN is a vibrant, innovative and growing human rights organisation with offices in London (10 staff) and Port Harcourt (40 staff). We ensure that our working environment balances participation and collaboration with efficient and effective delivery of outputs and outcomes. We support innovative and technology focussed solutions to our work ensuring that impact is our top priority. 

Our values

In order to deliver the strongest impact in Nigeria and the Niger Delta, we must embody the personal and professional values, ethics and behaviours that we are trying to encourage amongst Citizens, Civil Society, Local, State & Federal Government, and National & International Oil Companies we are working with to bring about positive and real change in the Niger Delta.

A strong moral and ethical code is the foundation to which we can bring about positive and real change and we need to hold true these values, ethics and behaviours in our personal and professional interactions throughout our careers at SDN to maximise the impact we are trying so hard to achieve.
SDNs Personal & Professional Ethical Framework is defined below. It is a complimentary internal and external framework that underpins everything we aspire to achieve as a Civil Society Organisation in the Niger Delta.

Personal Ethics:


  • Respect to all SDN personnel and property - we encourage respect to all individual’s and property of SDN to form a cohesive bond of trust within the organisation.
  • Tolerance - the acceptance that other people hold different views from ourselves.
  • Honesty - to act in truthfulness (linked to professional integrity)
  • Compassion & Empathy - understanding and appreciate the feelings others that are suffering and accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate that suffering.

Professional Ethics:


  • Integrity - to be straightforward and honest in all of our professional and business relationships.
  • Objective - to not allow bias, conflict of interest or undue influence of others to override our professional or business judgements.
  • Competence and Due Care - to maintain professional knowledge and skill at the level required to ensure that a donor or employer receives competent professional research, analysis and advocacy based on current developments in international Charities or NGO’s, legislation and techniques and act diligently and in accordance with applicable technical and professional standards.
  • Confidentiality - to respect the confidentiality of information acquired as a result of our professional and business relationships and, therefore, not disclose any such information to third parties without proper and specific authority, unless there is a legal or professional right or duty to disclose, nor use the information for the personal advantage of the professional or third parties.
  • Professional Behaviour - to comply with relevant laws and regulations and avoid any action that discredits the International Civil Society.
