Currently berthed at Bideford, as a static exhibit, the aim of the Steamship Freshspring Trust is to return the ship to operation, ensuring the long-term future of SS Freshspring as a nationally important, restored and working example of steam ship engineering and technology. In developing and managing an important heritage tourism attraction, SS Freshspring makes a significant contribution to the local economy. The ship is a resource to attract and inspire young people to engage in STEAM and learn about their maritime and engineering heritage in a way that enables them to develop their skills, knowledge, and confidence, and to widen their aspirations and future employment opportunities. The Trust also engages with people of all ages in volunteering to develop their skills, confidence, self-esteem, satisfaction from their work and sense of being part of a community. Now on the journey to secure the sustainable future of the ship we will explore, develop and test out innovative approaches to utilising low carbon and other environmentally sustainable technologies to power a heritage steam ship in a way which retains historical and engineering authenticity and may provide a model for other heritage ships
