Sunrise is a grassroots charity promoting equality, diversity and social inclusion in rural communities in Northern Devon. We work with the community to eliminate discrimination and promote strong, positive community relations through our range of services and activities, which challenge discrimination, help change attitudes and celebrate diversity. We want Devon to be a truly inclusive, welcoming community where individuals voices are heard and listened to, diversity is celebrated and there is equity of access to services and opportunities for all individuals with diverse identities. Sunrise was first established in October 2013 as a social group for refugees, migrant workers and asylum seekers; however it soon became apparent that users were facing a range of issues and difficulties which were not being addressed by local service providers. In response, we started supporting users and runs a range of services and activities to cater for the needs of diverse people. Services for diverse individuals are free of cost and include English language classes, groups, and conversation clubs, 1-1 support, guidance and advice. Making connections is important in achieving wellbeing, yet more challenging for people isolated by their difference. In Northern Devon, it can be difficult for people to access services and groups due to rurality and low incomes. We provide opportunities for individuals to expand their networks, reduce loneliness and isolation. We are always looking at how we can work with communities to change attitudes and improve inclusion and cohesion. We have experience of providing a range of learning, sharing, talking and engagement opportunities, which promote inclusion, diversity, and address racism, homo/transphobia and discrimination.
