The John Rae Society was launched in December 2013 by a passionate group of people keen to see the extraordinary life and achievements of Dr John Rae rightly acknowledged, and his childhood home, Hall of Clestrain, preserved. We want to see John Rae take his place in world history as a ‘Great Scot’ and for his life to inspire generations to come. The society’s aims are:

To recognise the achievements of Arctic Explorer John Rae To research and identify the most appropriate option for the conservation and development of Hall of Clestrain To work in partnership to grow and share an understanding of the Arctic through education, research, knowledge transfer and cultural awareness To enhance community pride, wellbeing and facilities in the Orphir area To ultimately create an internationally significant visitor attraction dedicated to the legacy of John Rae and Arctic exploration.
