About the Programme
Course overview
During this eight week short course, you’ll learn the skills needed to start a career in data science, specialising in data engineering. You'll learn the theory behind databases and be able to define what big data means. You'll explore how to design, create and populate databases and how to manipulate and generate data with a focus on environmental data.
Throughout the course you'll be encouraged to think about how to transfer your knowledge of database theory and management skills to make better-informed decisions that can help with sustainable business practices. You'll learn how to design, build, capture and analyse data to make meaningful insights using structured query language (SQL) to interpret a business's environmental data.
Programme delivery
You'll be taught by highly experienced lecturers and also benefit from guest speakers, group exercises, and online learning to ensure that you can fit the course around your other commitments.
- All teaching is online on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, 10am-2pm
- Opportunity to attend extra support sessions and one to one reviews
- You’ll attend one in person day at our Newton Park campus in Bath. On this day you'll take part in workshops and a practice interview provided by The Data Place
Employability support
You’ll receive advice on how to get your first job in the tech and/or environmental industry. You'll also learn interview techniques and how to prepare for technical tests which will significantly enhance your job prospects.
The Data Place will be delivering guest lectures and giving you feedback on your final presentation. They'll be offering interviews to all students to give you real world experience of what to expect and maybe open the door to future job offers.
Eligibility requirements
To apply for this course you must:
- Be aged 19+
- Be looking to work in Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, Bristol or South Gloucestershire, either in a new job or increased responsibility in your current job that uses the skills from this course
- Have the right to live and work in the UK
- Not have completed a Skills Bootcamp funded by the Department for Education (DfE) in the last 12 months

These free online short courses are designed to fit around other commitments and involve around 30 hours of study per week. You're expected to spend a number of hours outside of teaching on independent study to support your learning. Your lecturers will support you with reading activities to do during your independent study.
Our Skills Bootcamps are fully funded by the DfE and therefore are free. We only accept applications from students who haven't completed a government funded Skills Bootcamp in the last 12 months.
You'll receive six months of employability support after completing a Skills Bootcamp. This includes your lecturers signposting you to networking events and job vacancies. You'll also receive a quarterly newsletter with the latest training opportunities, jobs fairs and tech events.
