Context
Over the past 10 years the Climate Bonds Initiative has successfully established a global green bonds market. We are materially contributing to a shift in investor perspectives, by framing the transition to a low-carbon economy from a burden – to an opportunity.
The next stage of development in addressing CBI’s mission is much deeper engagement with issuers and investors, on three levels: Capacity Building, Technical Assistance & Advisory services.
As an integral part of the management team, the Global Head of Capacity Building (CB) and Technical Assistance (TA) program will have responsibility for establishing, building and delivering CBI’s offering in Technical Assistance and Advisory services across its region
About the role
Climate Bonds has been providing technical assistance to support institutions and governments to issue thematic bonds by identifying eligible assets within their portfolio as ‘green’ or ‘sustainable’, ensuring that they are in line with the best market practices, CBI’s taxonomies and sector criteria, as well other taxonomies and guidelines including the client institutions’ own Climate Strategy and Framework.
Climate bonds is looking for a Global Head to lead a stand-alone Capacity Building and Technical Assistance team. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about CBI’s wider goals, knowledgeable on Taxonomies and its implementation. They should have the ability to lead commercial initiatives and originate opportunities by building and maintaining relationships as well as requisite technical familiarity to develop solutions and pathways for clients.
Being passionate in the fight against climate change is a key prerequisite, as well as the ability to express this commitment effectively to all partners and stakeholders.
- Build and manage the TA team including regional managers, technical analysts and project assistants.
- Ensure continuous learning and knowledge management to build out the CB&TA team and offering in conjunction with wider team/s
- Develop and maintain ongoing relations with MDBs, Funders, Investors and institutional stakeholders to ensure funding and revenue flow.
- Co-ordinate with Programmes with TA components to agree and deliver relevant CB&TA workstreams to time, budget and quality.
- Drive and facilitate recruitment and resourcing for the initiation and embedding of the team
- Co-ordinate with the Technical Development team to ensure correct application of CBI standards and taxonomies to CB&TA services.
- Manage and mentor the core and regional CB&TA matrix team
- Take reasonable care for the health and safety of self and others who may be affected by acts or omissions related to your work. Co-operate fully with the management of the Company with regard to any duty or requirement imposed on them by the relevant Health and Safety legislation to allow that duty or requirement to be carried out or complied with.
- Drive the embedding and consolidation of the CB&TA function including team KPIs, financials/budget, marketing material, procedures and policies.
- Co-ordinate with the regional teams to coordinate the CB&TA activities and review the technical assistance proposals, capacity, budgets and delivery done by the Regional TA Managers.
- Develop a product and business strategy with the core teams and SMT to create a pipeline and evolution path for the Technical Assistance service and product offering. These include the legal, commercial and technical aspects so that it fits into the overall CBI strategic service offering.
- Develop guidelines and procedures to ensure effective implementation of the end-to-end service.
- Support the regional teams to elaborate their CB&TA work plans, proposals, capacity, budgets and delivery teams.
- Identify areas of commercial opportunities.
- Source and maintain partners and outsource providers for efficient and effective delivery of CB&TA components in conjunction with regional managers and teams and where required and co-ordinate with HQ teams such as Legal, Finance and Governance areas.
- Establish monitoring, evaluation and learning strategies to ensuring ongoing product development and creating a credible space for CBI in the market as a Capacity Building and Technical Assistance provider of choice.
Advocacy, Awareness & Communications
- Represent or ensure team’s representation of Climate Bonds at high-level stakeholder engagements. Attend relevant conferences and events and when possible, present CBI’s work.
- Explore and initiate collaborative working with other relevant partners and stakeholders.
- Proven ability to build relationships and influence senior stakeholders
Requirements
- Excellent strategic, analytical, systems thinking, and problem-solving skills, with capacity to see the big picture.
- Extensive relevant management and industry experience in the commercial space.
- Coaching and mentoring skills.
- Master’s degree in Finance, Engineering, Business, Economics, or related fields.
- 10+ years of relevant experience.
- Confidence in working with client relationships.
- Excellent communication (writing and speaking) skills in English.
- Ability to show initiative in developing the role and to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to manage, coordinate and prioritise across multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines.
- Creative and organised, with attention to detail.
- Knowledge of finance, capital markets, bond issuances.
- Collaborative and efficient in working with colleagues from other teams.
- Self-motivated and flexible.
- Proven experience with combination of strategy, operations and project/program management.
- Self-starter and able to work independently.
