350.org is looking for a junior team member to assist us with our campaigns and organising for climate justice in South Africa. The position is a 6 month, temporary position to provide cover for team members on long leave.

350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. Our online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are led from the bottom up by thousands of volunteer organizers in over 188 countries. 350.org works hard to organize in a new way—everywhere at once, using online tools to facilitate strategic offline action. About the South Africa Junior Campaigner/Organiser

The South Africa Junior Campaigner/Organiser is a temporary position to cover for both a senior campaigner and an organiser consecutively. The position will include implementation of campaign strategy with the support of the South African team as well as reactively responding to enquiries from 350.org groups and our target audience. Supporting individuals and groups through keeping in regular contact with them, connecting them with each other and connecting them to resources. Success in this position would mean our network of groups is maintained and our campaigns do not lose momentum.The South Africa Junior Campaigner/Organiser reports to the South African Team leader, is part of the Africa Regional Team, and 350.org’s Global Programme Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organising
    • Absorbing potential organisers from 350Africa.org’s activities, both offline and online.
    • Responding to enquiries from people to 350Africa.org to get involved.
    • Supporting groups to grow and be more strategic and effective through:
      • Access to resources
      • Regular communication
      • In person meetings
      • Working together
  • Mobilising
    • Coordinating offline events and groups involvement in events.
    • Incorporating groups in 350Africa.org campaigns.
    • Empowering groups to support each other.Supporting groups to hold their own events, and ensuring 350Africa.org is able to amplify them.
  • Implementing campaigns
    • Implementing campaign plans together with the 350.org team and groups/partners, by consulting with them, delegating tasks and responsibilities, and coordinating their work.
    • Employ a variety of tactics including collaboration with partners, public campaigning (both offline and online).
  • Networking
    • Raising the profile of campaigns at regular partner meetings, conferences and events, and through supporting the work of partners. Representing 350Africa.org at these events.
    • Nurturing relationships with individuals and organisations in the climate and energy sector in South Africa, as well as complimentary sectors.
  • Assisting the wider team
    • From time to time, working with the wider African and organisational team on different projects. Presenting our work, representing our perspectives and assisting in the success of colleagues work.
  • Supporting and attending events, including protest actions.

Essential knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Personable with a high EQ
    • The role requires a significant amount of personal interaction both with 350.org staff, partners and members of the public. Be outgoing and open, with an ability to judge personal situations and work towards the optimal outcome.
  • Event support
    • Support campaign events, from protests and creative NVDAs (Non-Violent Direct Actions) to mobilising events to bring interested and active people together
  • Writing and research
    • Communicate a point clearly in a variety of written forms and for a wide range of audiences.
  • Public speaking and presentation skills 
    • Able to clearly put across a point and defend it.

  • Organised and prioritisation
    • Organised, detail-oriented and accurate. Able to create work plans and anticipate deadlines. Be comfortable juggling multiple priorities with competing deadlines. 
  • Self-Management
    • Ability to set professional boundaries. Resilient and able to manage self and keep composure in times of stress. Able to work independently with minimum supervision.

Required Qualifications

  • One year of experience in an advocacy focused organisation.

Desired (but not required) Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a climate change or environment related role.
  • Demonstrable interest and passion for environmental justice. 
  • Proficiency in online tools such as Google Drive, Slack and Zoom.
  • Drivers licence.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working remotely, both independently & on teams, and who is  highly responsive, able to lead initiatives while also taking direction from others.

Location:  This position is based in our office in Johannesburg, South Africa but applicants from other areas can apply

Position Type:Full time, temporary (6 months)

Start Date: Ideally 1st February, but flexible for the right candidate

Compensation: ZAR 496,601-Level 1.2

Travel: Occasional international and domestic travel may be required.
