Job Summary
The Senior Regional Organiser will support the strategic growth of Afrika Vuka - the Regional Networking platform - as well as lead online and offline engagement aiming to significantly increase cohesion and involvement across the projects and campaigns we are leading or supporting across the region. The Senior Regional Organiser will be driving, tracking and analysing the qualitative and quantitative growth of Afrika Vuka while ensuring our base and new supporters are sustainably engaged in key regional and global moments, and ensuring that groups’ leaders are empowered, supported and connected.
This position will work as part of 350Africa.org team and will be working closely with the Africa Regional Campaigner, Africa Regional Director and the regional team and other organising communities within 350.org for cross-country collaborations and key mobilisation moments. Externally the Senior Regional Organiser will work with the Afrika Vuka network and other allies and partners in the climate movement in Africa.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Driving and coordinating the Afrika Vuka platform to strengthen and implement a regional organising strategy with the network in line with 350Africa.org’s strategic focus
- Developing and delivering strategic, creative and inspiring moments, trainings and other activities to engage the AfrikaVuka network and new supporters, in partnership with a diverse range of partners and groups across Africa
- Actively developing movement support strategies. Working in close partnership with local 350 groups and partners in Benin, Togo, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania and DRC to support them in implementing and delivering their ongoing projects and campaigns, and tying this work back into the wider Afrika Vuka network
- Driving, tracking and analysing engagement with Afrika Vuka. Reporting these numbers and keeping the team informed, with guidelines on how to improve existing strategies to engage and absorb new supporters and groups into the network and importantly increase engagement from new and existing groups
- Supporting the Regional Team, the Afrika Vuka platform and partners across the region to achieve common campaigning goals for solutions and a just transition, playing a design, facilitation and logistical support role during meetings, gatherings, and 350-led trainings
- Coordinating and supporting ongoing organising work and 1:1 relationship building to support campaign development on the ground by local groups and members of 350’s network
- Exploring other organising opportunities based on existing regional partners’ and network-led work to scale up the climate movement
Required skills and experience
- At least 3 years or more of experience as an organiser, facilitator or trainer in social movements, with in depth knowledge about the African climate justice campaigning landscape
- 3 years or more experience leading, facilitating and designing convening spaces and climate trainings for activists in Africa that aim to empower and connect the movement, as well as demonstrated ability to articulate reflections and learnings from these pieces as part of a wider organising strategy
- Ability to clearly identify and articulate the resources and support local groups and partners need as well formulating plans and measures to meet these wherever possible
- Commitment to upholding Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion values, building these into strategy through thoughtful consideration of multi-cultural and diverse perspectives in the regional organizing strategy
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with fluency in English
- Experience in organising and mobilising across Africa, working with diverse partners, organising distributed events and the attendant logistics and administration of those efforts
- Proven experience at the intersection of online and offline organising, including using digital tools and communications to recruit volunteers to take on-the-ground action and sustaining supporters’ long-term engagement
- Experience in community organising work or supporting community-led groups across the region
- Ability to communicate in clear and creative ways about climate justice
- Identifying new partners and collaboration potential for the organisation as a whole
- Highly organised, skilled at prioritisation and time management, and able to manage multiple tasks
Desired (but not required) skills and experiences
- Experience with other issues as they intersect with climate advocacy, such as gender justice, food security, human rights, etc.
- Understanding of the regional climate landscape and community and related priorities, needs and gaps
- Fluency in other languages, especially French
- Experience using at least some of the key tools employed by the 350.org digital team, including ActionKit, Action Network, Salesforce, mass and peer-to-peer SMS tools, social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Discord, Tiktok and Instagram), or the willingness and ability to quickly learn how to use new tools and techniques
We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others.
