Purpose:

The Analytics Engineer role exists to support our business by leveraging data to drive informed decision-making, enhance reporting capabilities, and improve data infrastructure.

You will be responsible for ensuring that all data consumers, from analysts to data scientists to third-party partners, can easily access and manipulate data to make data-driven decisions quickly.

You will revamp analytical data models, level up reporting capabilities, and create a single source of truth for all data stakeholders. You will be pivotal in defining and executing plans for data architecture best practices, upskilling business users in data manipulation, and continuously evaluating and improving the data stack to support the organization's data-driven goals.

Accountabilities:

Evaluate and Improve Data Warehouse: You will assess the current data warehouse (Snowflake) and data transformation processes (DBT) to define and execute a plan for data architecture best practices, ensuring efficiency and reliability.

Requirements Gathering and Collaboration: You'll work closely with analysts in the Commercial, Marketing, and Finance teams to capture and prioritize business needs, iteratively improving cross-functional workflows and processes.

Data Modelling and Infrastructure: You will design and build reusable data components/models in our analytical data platform (Snowflake + DBT) to ensure a single source of truth for all data stakeholders. You'll also Implement data integrity tests at each stage in the ELT process to guarantee accurate and complete business metrics.

Reporting Enhancement and Training: You will have responsibility for levelling up reporting capabilities by training and coaching self-serve reporting business users in data manipulation, aggregation, and visualization. Collaborate with executive, leadership, and operational teams to design, build, and iterate on reporting interfaces and alerting systems.

Agile Collaboration: You will work within an agile environment, embracing iterative development and responding to changing project requirements to ensure timely and efficient project delivery.

Technical Skills:

Data Technologies:

Proficient in working with modern data technologies, including:

Data Warehousing: Extensive experience with Snowflake or similar high-performance columnar cloud data warehouses (e.g., BigQuery, Redshift).

ETL/ELT Tools: Skilled in utilizing data ingestion tools like Stitch or Fivetran. 

Transformation and Modelling

Proficient in using DBT for data transformations, ensuring adherence to data modelling principles for creating efficient and scalable data structures.

Can use incremental approaches within DBT projects to enable parts of it to be lower latency for downstream use cases 

Airflow knowledge would be a bonus.

Database Expertise

Strong SQL skills with a focus on advanced concepts, such as window functions, partitioning tables, and DDL statements, enabling complex data manipulation and extraction.

Able to manipulate semi-structured data.

Ability to understand query/execution plans and make recommendations for performance improvement.

Software Engineering Best Practices

Familiarity with applying software engineering best practices, such as test-driven development and version control, to ensure robust and maintainable data solutions.

Experience working in an agile environment.

Experience with best practices in testing data models and knowledge of tools or processes to enhance testing capabilities.

CI/CD skills would be a bonus (Jenkins/Github actions)

Data Quality and Governance

Demonstrated understanding of data quality best practices, documentation, and governance to ensure the accuracy and reliability of analytical data.

Data Visualization

Familiarity with data visualization tools like Looker, Power BI, Tableau, etc.

The ability to design and create semantic layers for improved data presentation.

Data Modelling Methodologies

Knowledge of database modelling methodologies such as Kimball, Inmon, or Data Vault, ensuring the creation of effective data models that align with business needs.

Be able to build generic and custom tests for data models.

Consider source freshness and other data quality checks during the design process.

Programming Skills

Additional proficiency in a programming language, such as Python or R, to extend analytical capabilities and facilitate advanced data manipulations.

Command-Line Interface (CLI)

Being comfortable with working in a CLI environment for performing data operations and automating tasks would be a bonus.

Presentation and Communication

Strong ability to present complex technical concepts clearly and concisely, effectively communicating insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in both a verbal and written manner.

Human Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to switch between technical and non-technical audiences. Examples include: Outcome and delivery-focused status updates to data stakeholders; Clear and concise summaries of bug investigations and solution proposals; Diagrams and documents outlining solution designs
  • Influential in advocating for data best practices and driving data literacy within the organization.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous learning, embracing new challenges, technologies, and best practices to enhance data analytics capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and drive solutions within the team.
  • Capable of influencing and motivating team members to deliver high-quality work and drive continuous improvement
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, fostering a positive and supportive team environment.
  • Efficiently manage time and prioritize tasks to ensure timely project delivery and meet deadlines.

Hybrid workplace

We endeavour to support our people to make sure work... well, works for them. To that end we are trialling out different ways of working - at the moment, we are remote first, getting together in person in London for key moments and to support connection and collaboration. Although this isn't how we're working right now, to join us, you should be able to work in London for 1-2 days per month.

Our recruitment processes are fully remote, taking advantage of the wonders of modern-day technology.
