The Head of Football in BBC Sport is responsible for leading all our coverage in football and overseeing the effective co-ordination of football output across all platforms – TV, radio and online, with a particular focus on digital impact, on iPlayer, Sounds and the BBC Sport website and app, reflecting changing audience habits. This involves taking charge of the coverage of some of our most prized properties; Premier League/Match of the Day, the FA Cup, the WSL and the World Cups and European Football Championships.  

Football is at the heart of BBC Sport and we are seeking a creative and talented Head, with clearly impressive senior experience at this level.

Main Responsibilities

  • The Head of Football is responsible for defining an editorial vision for Football delivered by the team and department and will ensure that there is continuous editorial and creative development.
  • The Head is accountable for the editorial quality of the output and, in partnership with the Head of Production, will manage the financial and operational challenges that go along with such a large, high profile portfolio.  
  • There is a large team to lead so the ideal candidate must have strong editorial leadership with the ability to offer guidance and advice, helping to identify training and development needs for their team, and to sourcing and developing key on air talent.  
  • They will also drive the relationship with other areas, internal (other BBC departments) and external (rights holders), and ensure BBC’s football output connects with audiences in a digital world, working closely with colleagues in Digital Sport and Sports News.
  • They will play a key part in driving the overall leadership and strategy of both BBC Sport Productions and BBC Sport as a whole, ensuring inclusivity and diversity are priorities.

 General Responsibilities

  • To be editorially, financially and managerially responsible for a range of productions and output.
  • Innovating & evolving strategy for the department, anticipating audience needs & maintaining relevance on all existing and future platforms.
  • Ensure all programmes/content are delivered on time and within budget, encouraging the highest possible creative standards throughout. 
  • Financial acumen and a strong sense of driving best value for the licence fee. Able to manage budgets, control costs and maximise value across all expenditure.  
  • A commitment to creating both diverse content and teams to reflect our audiences and ensuring best practice.
  • Drive the development of productions and pitch and win new business, playing a key role in the Commissioning process, where required.
  • To take a lead role in driving forward new projects and new ways of working, collaborating with other departments. To provide clear direction, editorial insight and quality control for both ongoing and newly commissioned projects. 
  • Playing a key ambassadorial role in ensuring the BBC has effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.  
  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge of industry trends, innovations and creating effective networks.

Are you the right candidate?

  • The ideal candidate will have an excellent detailed understanding and great experience of football and of production of football programmes.
  • They will have a wide experience of managing a large team and be able to demonstrate balanced and objective editorial judgment.
  • They must have a high level of creativity and be able to bring a fresh new approach with the ability to get the best and most creative ideas in others.
  • Relationship building is critical in the role so you must be able to motivate and communicate clearly – with your team, all stakeholders and with very high profile on air talent.
